How you call.

Postby Gooseboy » Wed Jul 20, 2005 12:46 pm

Ok I think it would be a good idea everybody post up exzactly what you say into the call for what kind of call (feed call, hail call exc. not the brand), and when to use this type of calling method.

I say ticka ticka on the feed call, and I say quit for ever thing else.

I say dit dit dit really fast and irregular. Produces a pretty good feed sound.
I say dwit for the rest.
Input that enables becomes thoughts that smother.

For a quack I say quit or quita
For a slow feed call I say ticka ticka and thow in a quack for a fast feed I say kiddy kiddy
To vary the quacks I growl the words
I also vary the tempo and volume as I call

well IMO the words that are being talked about are good to get you started. Those words get the tongue to go through the right motions, and allow air to be put into the call. Not nessisarily the right kind of air though, but that is another subject.
Some of you are using words that make you turn on the note and cut off the note with the front of the tongue twit...... some of you are using words that use the middle of the tongue. like quack some are using a combination like quit or tick... In my mind whatever is most comfortable for you. I think it is handy to know how to use all of the tongue movements that have been previously mentioned. I don't realy say anything into the call anymore I just use the tongue in those movements to turn on and cut off the air. Jim James of Carlson calls calls it gating. I can then add or take away(in theory) larynix fluctuation. This is what some refer to as grunting or growling into the call to get the sound I want.

I use the middle part of my tongue for most stuff ...quacks....like gwick
I use both the front and the rear for single cut feed at different times. like kick kick kick and tat tat tat.
Double cut (rolling feed) ticka ticka ticka....
Bouncing hen quita quita....

That is my take on it for what it is worth....well you asked for it.

Allan Hammond is just the only call maker I know of in NZ. I think a lot of this man, and own one of his stabilized walnut duck calls. His calls were pretty expensive but very unique.

thank you. you guys are very kind. Unless you are just teasing me again.

I don't say anything....or at least i dont think of saying anything. I just release and stop forced air from deep down with a tongue movement from the roof of my mouth just behind the top front teeth.

Calling to duck hunters is like a purse to a female, they all have different styles and colors. Callers all have there own likes and dislikes. I like to use the the GAK and GUT into the call. I don't use my tongue at all i feel it makes you loose half the QUACK it only sounds like QUA in the call but with closing my throat i can get the full QUACK! The GAK for the more LAY DOWN quieter calling and the GUT for the real desperate hen who wants the birds to come back. make sure u use alot of single quacks and feeding call in your calling especially well into the season. Birds hear the same long calls and greeting calls over and over alll season and get CALL SMART. Use them to get the attention of the birds then just keep the quacks coming 5-6 one after the other at a time works well. The feeding call is hard to master some guys can't get the TICKA TICKA TICKA going real fast. So just use TICK TICK TICK TICK and that works very well also. We were up hunting river birds a few weeks ago and i was using a lot of long calls and the birds would circle but not come in, once i started the single quacks and some feeding calls we had our limit in no time at all. If the wind is blowing hard you might need to blow a little more to get their attention. GOOD LUCK WITH THE CALLING
