A-5 jamming

Postby Ithaca Dog » Thu Oct 29, 2009 10:44 pm

My father's old A5 is consistently jamming on me. I heard somthing a while back about adjusting the friction rings to fix this but I don't know how to do it. It is not kicking out the shell and the hull is getting stuck in on the outside of the reciever. Pretty much right in the middle of the hull. It is almost like the ejector isn't pulling the shell out all the way? Maybe it is the ejector. But I am hoping it is a simple fix. My Dad took it into a smith before he died and had the man go over the whole gun. He had to replace the stock and forearm, put a scope on it for slugs, and had him fix the jamming problem. It had been jamming on him for awhile. He had used it as his primary gun since he was 15. Until last weekend I hadn't shot it because I am not much of a deer hunter. I wanted to run a few slugs through it for nostalga's sake and maybe shoot a deer with it in our rifle zone for the same reason. One day I would like to restore it back to the way I remember it, light colored wood and set up for ducks with bismuth or classic doubles style shot for one duck hunt a year. Right now I just don't want it to jam. Any suggestions. The nearest gunsmith, specializing in rifles, is four hours away and I would like to learn more about how to use this piece of my history in a more satisfactory way. Thanks

It is more likely the extractor rather than the ejector. However, you might have the friction rings assembled incorrectly. Order a schematic of the gun and a instruction booklet if you are going to work on it yourself. The A5 has a lot of parts and you need to learn how it works.

I think you can download what you need at either Brownells or the Midway USA web sites. Your friction rings may be in wrong or they are missing all together. I think you can order a a-5 "kit" from Brownells with new rings, springs, etc... there is a lot of a-5 info on the web.

Look under the forearm of the shotgun for a sticker showing the different arrangements of the brakes. If it is not there you can download an A-5 manual from the Browning website and see the diagrams for how to set the brakes up for a particular load being shot. http://www.browning.com/customerservice ... /index.asp

Once you see the diagrams it's easy to see how/why the different arrangements work (basically the "rings" are friction brakes and the wedge portion of one is driven under the tapered edge of the other causing more friction...different arrangements make for more or less "braking" due to friction caused by the wedge effect).

i live in a little town in the Sacramento Valley, In California, now as for your Browning Auto-5, This is only true if it is a 3 inch Mag. Un-screw your for-arm cap, pull off your Barrel and for-arm, Their will be a spring around your tube, their should be 4 rings 2 with knotches and 2 flat put the knotched one on top of the flat, slide it onto your tube, then slide spring on, then put the rings the same way ontop of the spring, Then put your gun back to geather, With it like that you can shoot 3 in. shells or 2 3/4 shells. I have shot Auto-5 Brownings for 40 years. This is only true with the Browning 3 inch Mag. TAKE CARE AND GOOD LUCK-- P.S Some folks will tell you that my way is not correct, Well i can only tell you what works for me.

95% of all problems with Auto 5's is crud in the action spring and action spring tube. You will have to remove the butt stock to gain access to the spring tube. Get the right size screw drivers for the lock screw and the tang screw. ONLY remove those two screws. The other screw goes to the trigger spring and if you try and remove it You WILL screw up the screw slot.
