Can I get my gloss wood stocks to matte finish? Is using fine steel wool the best way?

oakie,u can rough the finish up with steel wool or wet sand with 1200 grit wet paper.u can also rough it up with say 500 grit and then clear coat it with krylon matte clear acrylic it will last for a while.u can get it at walmart.when i camo wood stocks i rough them up with sandpaper but i remove almost all the finish though.if u rough it up good the acrylic should stick ok.

I have use auto rubbing compound on a couple glossy Rem 1100 stocks. Just applied and rubbed in direction of grain let dry buff off and repeat until get to the degree of matte you want. I taped off the checkering area on the grip and forearm to avoid getting compound in them. Usually 3 to 4 sessions will get that shine off but still look finished. This doesn't really remove the finish, just dulls it.

Are they hand rubbed to a gloss finish or are they varnished / coated with a high gloss polymer of some sort? the ones that are coated I find easier to use a mild stripper, some sanding and then give them a couple of coats with linseed oil but not enough to bring out a shine.
