Stuck choke tube

Postby Tyshe84 » Thu Feb 02, 2012 7:33 am

My choke in my 870 is stuck. I have no idea how since I put it in by hand after last turkey season but it is-recommendations for getting it free. Time to convert back to a trukey rig and leave it that way as I have a duck gun now.

it took a nice choke tube wrench and 2 ppl to get a cracked choke out of my 870.

a good thing would be to get some lube on the chokes is when you install them,

but if it's really stuck you might need to heat up the barrel (outside) and then try.

 NOT ANOTHER ONE

Search for "stuck coke tube" and you will get hours of reading. I have used: Heat, Kroil, my special custom impact choke tube tool with a Dewalt Impact wrench (my personal favorite) and a towel with a hard plastic hammer and hitting it all the way around the barrel on the tube to break it loose. All work for different degrees of "STUCK".

I have a Benelli Nova pump and the exact same thing happened to me last year. It was literally rusted into the gun because I had taken poor care of it. My gunsmith tried heating it up with a little torch and adding oil to try and break it free. This did nothing but turn my camo dipped barrel black... He then got a drill and went from the inside vertically and drilled it out without damaging the threads. How he did it, I have no idea, but it definitely took some skill. He charged me 20 bucks, and now I keep high temperature moly grease on it to make sure it never happens again.

I soaked mine in Hoppes for 24 hours. Then I took a straight edge screw driver and tapped the choke around till it broke free. Always put anti-seize or choke lube on the threads before putting it back in.

Stuck choke tube

Postby vahunter2469 » Tue Feb 14, 2012 5:24 pm

Soak it in PB blaster or kerosene overnight (if it's not camo dipped) and try again. Depending on the type of choke wrench try tapping on the wrench while turning it loose. If its still stuck try heating with a torch carefully (if its not camo dipped) and without fresh blaster or kerosene so it doesn't catch fire :) let us know what works. And like previously stated, use a good grease to prevent seizing.
