A-5 Mag cycling issue

Postby Weston81 » Mon Oct 15, 2012 8:23 am

Every year prior to duck season a couple of us go out and shoot skeet with duck loads to prep for the season. My Dad has a early 90's A-5 mag that was having some strange issue's. Wanted to get some thoughts on what you guys think. We were shooting 3 inch shells and the gun shot a few rounds without issue. Then it went from fine to shooting one shell, and not cycling at all, not a jam nothing. You'd open the bolt and the spent shell would eject and load the next. Checked the switch on the side that doesn't allow the shell to feed when flipped and it was fine, and checked the spacers/rings, whatever they are called that you put in take out based on shell size. They weren't damaged and put in correctly. Again, the bolt wasn't opening when firing and discarding a shell, it was a single shot. I walked over to take a look and the gun was hit and miss with the issue. I'd shoot twice without incident then the next time it wouldn't eject the shell. Thoughts?

Another bit of information that may make a difference is that there is a synthetic stock on the gun. The orginal has a small crack in it and my dad didn't want to furhter damage it so he switched it out.

Make sure the magazine tube is clean and a light skim of oil on it. Mine did that same exact thing after being worked on by a gunsmith and found he left the tube bone dry becaues the gas from the gas system would foul it up. Yeah, I didn't even respond and took it home and tore it down myself and threw on a very light skim of oil and the gun returned to normal.

Also did you dad start to notice the issue when he put the synthetic stock on or was it working fine prior to that?

It was shot 6--8 times prior to the synthentic stock without issue. Pulled the synthentic stock off and sanded down anything that was touching basically making it a free floating barrell. Put some lubrication in the tube and still no dice.Even tried a few different shells just to be sure it wasn't something with the shell. Looks like it's going to the shop to get torn down.

If the inside of the forearm has a schematic for the rings set for 3 inch mag to cut down the recoil, some loads will not work ( it happened this year the you should only use one ring and the brass one and use i t for HV steel loads it now works properly.

Just make sure I understand correctly. So you are saying set up the ring system as if I am going to shoot 2 3/4 inch shells?

Yes for most steel you use the 2 3/4" setting. When the gun was designed 3" shells would have 1 1/2oz or more of shot. Most steel loads just don't have the weight needed to cycle the gun on the heavy setting.
