SX2, SX3 and Browning Gold slide buffers.

Postby duckslayer74 » Wed Oct 24, 2012 5:43 pm

Copterdoc pointed out to me last night that my buffer was bad and needed replaced. How often or how many rounds should this be done? I know it will be an approximation but just wondering the general service life. All I shoot are 3" 1.25oz loads or the occasional trap load. Just to be safe I bought 4 for my SX2 12ga and 2 for my brand new SX3 20ga, I won't be down because of a buffer again.

I think that mine have lasted about 1,000 rounds, (mostly light trap loads) before I notice that the bolt is rapping the back of the receiver.

Just like you, I didn't realize it soon enough the first time, so I've got a little extra "clearance" now!

Can you guys post pics? It might help others who have no idea what or where the buffer is located etc.

Hah, figures. I bought my gun used my years ago ( 2002 irc) and item 66 is missing. My gun hasn't beat the crap out of itself yet...but knowing that it's missing makes me wonder.

Ok looking at the other thread that spawned this one.. In the Shadowgrass gun you all said his needs replaced, Why? The silver streak on the receiver.

The bolt is peening the receiver. I circled where, in this pic.

Where does the buffer mount too? I'm assuming to the back of the slide assembly?

The buffer is that "rubberish" block between the two circles, and above the recoil spring plunger.

There is a hole drilled into the receiver, straight back towards the butt. The buffer fits into that hole.

In order to remove it, just slip a narrow tip standard screwdriver up alongside the plunger, and between the buffer and the receiver. The buffer slides forward, out of the hole.

My new gun has about 300 rounds through it, and already it's hitting the reciever. I guess it's time. Where do you guy's get these buffer's? Thanks!

If mine was bad yours will most likely be toast. I have probably shot ~3000 rounds give or take.

I looked in my owners manual for suggestions on replacing the buffer but I came up with nothing. Copterdoc pointed it out to me in a different thread that's why I posted this thread. Hope it can save some receivers from damage. I ordered the parts from Browning, they're cheap. For 6 buffers and shipping was like $24.

Thanks duckslayer and copterdoc for the heads up! Great stuff to know for sure. I will get some extra buffers and be keeping an eye on it. And the gas piston spring  Is there any other issues with the sx3 that I should be aware of?

I've read about the gas piston spring breaking but I've not had that problem with mine, I have 5 buddies that have Golds and X3s and they have not had a problem either.

Look a couple of posts up, the picture with the shadowgrass sx2. The peening was shown circled in red. Look for wear that looks similiar in yours.

I'm still not really sure what I'm looking for. The pics are tough to see, or maybe I'm just blind.

I've got a ton of rounds through this thing so I'm assuming I should change it.
