Mossberg 500 malfunction

Postby TravisN » Sat Jan 12, 2013 11:43 pm

I have a Mossberg 500 waterfowl edition. The gun has performed flawlessly all season until last week when it began malfunctioning. I thought it might have something to do with moisture, ice, cold etc. and being dirty, but even after a full teardown, clean, and lube it is still acting up. It will work fine at first, but as the day wears on it begins to malfunction. What happens is the first shot fires fine, I cycle the action to eject the empty (which it does) and reload another shell from the magazine (which it does), but then when I pull the trigger nothing happens. The trigger pulls back, but doesn't fire the shell. I have to cycle the action very hard to get it to eject the second shell (unfired), and then the third shell fires fine. This makes no sense to me. Does anyone have any ideas?

Take the bolt out, take it apart and clean the Kosmoline out of the thing. Mossberg ships their guns with enough of that stuff to grease a tractor trailer. Likely your firepin is so gunked up it won't move well enough to fire. At the very least, dueche the thing out from the firing pin hole end with some gun scrubber or brake parts cleaner to flush the crud out, let it dry and then relube...SPARINGLY.

Thanks, but I have already done that and still have the issue. Any other ideas?

might be something in the chamber causing an obstruction. You might try cleaning the chamber out with steel wool on a brush powered by a drill. Put oil on it and don't over do it. However, it will clean up any debris or surface rust that is possibly build up.

Check out Mossberg owners forum. Dont be afraid of closing the chamber to hard. I got an old 835 and if you close the chamber like a pansy it wont fire. Just goes click.

I have a 500 I use on occasion, and the same problem happens to me as well. When bringing up the next shell, throw the forearm up a harder than usual. If birds are droppin in and it happens open the chamber part way and throw the forearm up harder and it seems to help. As far as the cause of the problem I have no idea and I been shooting it for over 10yrs.

Thanks. I am trying to avoid having to take it to the gunsmith.

You shouldn't have to try to slam it closed. I have two other Mossbergs that work great just as this one did for the past 3 months.
