Staking a Shell Latch on a Remington 1187

Postby rainingmallards » Sun Dec 29, 2013 8:47 pm

My shell latch keeps coming out of my 1187. Any tips on how to stake the latch
back in place? Is there a particular reason that these come loose?

I had a Remington 1100, very similar to an 11-87, for thirty years. The shell latch came detached very early it its career and stayed that way until a gunsmith restored the weld for a brief time. Then it soon became unattached again for the rest of it's time in my possession. Since the both of the pins that retain the trigger group pass right through the latch, it is always firmly in place when the gun is in operational mode. Not having it permanently attached is a minor inconvenience. I never worried about it.

I think that it is generally held in place with a couple of tiny spot welds. I would be very careful about allowing most welders to have access to my shotgun, especially in such a delicate area.

They are staked at the factory, not welded, and don't hold that we'll. I wouldn't waste the money on a staking tool or pay to have it done.

Do this.......clean the channel and latch with alcohol. Mix 2 part epoxy and place a small dab at the old staking points (2). Reassemble the gun and let it dry for 24 hours. Mine has stayed put for years.
