Magazine extension

Postby ILgoosehunter12 » Mon Feb 03, 2014 11:00 pm

Hey guys. I'm just brainstorming of a project to do. One idea that crossed my mind is making a magazine extension for my 870. I'm a cheap-wad so figured this would save me some money possibly. Has anyone ever done this before? Need some ideas on what to use for this project. Thanks, ILgoose

wouldnt be hard given you can get a spring long enough, and have access to a mig or tig welder.

I have an extension on my 870, VERY simple device. really a piece of pipe the threads on to the magazine end cap/ barrel nut threads with a longer spring. You'll also have to remove the dimples in the mag. tube for the factory plug and spring retainer. I can get you some measurements of mine (holds 8 total I think)

I personally believe that Briley makes the very best mag extensions.

Buy one, reverse engineer it, and sell it at close to what you paid for it.
Or, just buy one and use it.

Hey guys
Once you do the magazine extension and get rid of the dimpels, is there no going back to a regular magazine? What do you guys do when you have to plug your guns? Longer plugs?

Plug still works as required in my super mag after drilling the dimples. Just have to be careful when pulling the mag cap off!

I ended up just buying an extension. When I put it on, I didn't drill out the dimples. I filed them off. When I take my mag extension off, I just put my plug, regular spring, and that plastic spacer(??) back in and tighten the magazine cap on. Works good enough for me. I have noticed that the magazine cap tends to work itself lose more often since I filed the dimples off. I have shot clay birds with my mag extension on just to get used to the extra weight, make sure it functions, etc. I got in the habit, just in the few times I've shot with it off, to reach up there and just check my magazine cap is tight. Also, when you take the dimples off watch out because your plug will fly out. lol.

Carlson's. I THINK its the +6. I know I asked for the biggest one they make. I've shot 2 3/4 light loads and functioned them fine. I even shot some 3 inch and 3 1/2 and functioned perfect. I ended up getting an 1187 and put it on it and both gun and tube did fine.

I have a carlsons +2, a xstar +3, and a nordic +6. my money will continue to goto to nordic for the simple fact that they carry the longer tubes. Nothing like letting a half a box fly at a single doing it to the bags, out of frustration, hitting it all the way to the ground!!!!

Scroll down there is a pic of it, with the extended patternmaster I can almost do a +7 without worrying about fouling it up. I have seen ppl with them way past the barrel. 11 3" or 9 3.5" is just fine with me!!! :hammer:
