I hunted in a monsoon this weekend shooting teal. My magazine of my sbe now has rust in it. How do I take the tube iself off the gun? Is there an aftermarket stainless tube that I can install?
Also the button that releases the bolt is also rusting. Do they make an aftermarket stainless release that anyone knows of?
My M2 did the same thing. It was not the spring. The inside of the tube is not coated and is steel, at least the bottom 2 inches anyway. I polished it out with 0000 steel wool and cold blued it. Seemed to help. That gun is gone though. As far as I know the tubes are not user replaceable. You can buy aftermarket stainless springs for them. As for the bolt release, Briley makes and aftermarket one in a variety of colors. Anodized aluminum.
it unscrews but it is NOT at all easy to brake loose. lot of time you may have to heat it and you need a vice block for a benelli or some hardwood blocks and a cushion of some sort like a cloth to prevent finish damage. Do not clamp it too tight or you can damage the receiver. The old one if you are not saving it can be removed with a pipe wrench. I have found it also helps to stand it upright and fill the area around the tube with KROIL or brake free for a few days before removing them.
But sometimes you get lucky and they will just screw right out with little effort.
Isn't the bottom 2-3" the steel part that is pressed into the receiver? I never took mine apart, just polished it out and blued it. I'm glad my 1187 is stainless steel.
Chances of it rusting will be greater with unprotected metal. One person said they used touch up blue to slow the progression of rust. Frog lube may be a better source to protect. You have to remember that you will have a spring and follower working the area. May be someone with experience with frog lube or other compounds to protect metal like it will chime in.
What I don't understand is why they rust in the first place. Everything else on the camo gun is protected so good. I never did get mine really wet. Just condensation was enough. Frog Lube is a great product but not sure it will be a permanent fix. The spot bluing seemed to help and then just kept it lubed. If you could Ceracote it before putting it together and the thickness of the coating didn't impeded the follower seems would be a better fix.
I have never had one rust so I can not say why yours did but When I clean my guns I remove the spring and follower and spray the inside of the tube with oil then push a paper towel thru it several times keeping the paper towel wet with oil. never has failed me yet.
I would be careful with the rusted tube and watch it closely. Two guys I shoot sporting clays with have had the magazine tubes break off their 1100's both were 30+ year old guns that were used for hunting and clays. One was about 10 years ago and just as he shot the tube and barrel basically took off with the shot and fell in front of the stand. The other was just a year ago and he felt it getting loose while shooting and basically pulled it apart. Both broke off flush with the receiver and both were rusted thru.
I just keep a light coating of oil or Grease in the mag tube. I do have the sbe2.
