That's because siding with her is easy.
She was wrong, continues to be wrong and looks like she won't stop being wrong until she loses everything.
That said the treatment of her is wrong as well. The knee jerk reaction initially was expected. But destroying her brand is going to take a lot more than what I've seen...
IMO you can alway trust a Southerner to be honest about their feelings. And she was honest about her language as well and paid for it.
Personally, I would rather talk to anyone from the South that was candid about their feeling towards minorities than some two faced northerner that thinks that being PC is more important than being genuine. At least with a Racist Southerner you know where you stand and the reality is that at least you can respect the fact they have an opinion - rather than those that might hide it like some New Yorker that doesn't want to "offend".
So, was it wrong that she uttered those words? Depends, she said she said it but we don't know why or how. Was she wrong to admit it? Nope. Was the reaction over the top? The reaction was expected because it's not about anything but making money
. No one is trying to tell her or anyone else to reconsider their language. All the companies are doing is trying to protect the flow of money - she's radioactive until enough time passes that she is considered the Grand Dame of Low Country Cooking again. It will take about 2 years. She'll be fine. (edit: if she shuts up.)
I have no axe to grind with her. And I believe one of my sisters even gave me one her cookbooks once.
Eventually some enterprising producer is going to team her up with a black Chef, she'll get a new show and the food will still be a buttery delicious heart attack on a plate.
Like it or not, ultimately she represents Southern Cooking - not Southern White people...
Heck, I don't even like her and here I am sort of defending her.
All this for a bowl of borscht.
