It's not like we don't have on the order of 100,000 troops in Europe already either.
Now, if they were deploying this small group to Ukraine and having exercises on the Russian border, it would be something. Sending them to Poland looks like a weak President forced to make a move, but too scared to make a real move. It seems provocative, but not because of its excessive show of force as they did in Nevada, but because of its timidity.
BTW, I think we should not be sending a small force to train in our NATO allies in Eastern Europe as response. We should have been doing that all along. We need to be sending anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons to the Ukraine. Maybe we can simply redirect the arms we are sending to the Syrian rebels.
Obama so far has retreated from Iraq, he's trying to complete retreat from Afghanistan, he retreated from Nevada, and Putin knows he will retreat from wherever Putin needs him to retreat from.
That's why we need to send American arms and not Americans. They cannot be ordered to retreat.
I do worry that at some point Obama is going to over react to "prove" he is not weak after presenting that image. Will it be on American soil or will it be overseas? That is how this kind of show of weakness ends up in a true mess. Let's hope he finds some more drone targets so he can beat his chest and his defenders can say, see he's a tough guy. I really worry his big ego and thin skin could get us in a terrible mess with Russia, China, or here in the U.S.
A politician thinks of the next election; a statesman of the next generation. A politician looks for the success of his party; a statesman for that of the country. The statesman wished to steer, while the politician was satisfied to drift.
