I understand everything has to do with supply and demand

That is what is so strange as there is enough supply. It is not like in the 70s when twice there were shorages and so the prices more than doubled.

And the reason why there were shortages is Carter fixed the price of gas. The response? cut off supply. To believe the goverment can adjust or fix a item in the free market is stupid. But to guys like carter and Obama (read socialist) it makes sense.

Be sure to support tax increases on big oil. That way they can pass those taxes on to us in fuel costs.

FYI, Carter was not in office in '73 when the Arab oil embargo happened. I remember 10 gal max per fill up if they even had gas.

Maybe its just me who remembers the 1979 energy crisis happening in 1979. I was there, or at least I thought I was. Am I crazy?

The 1973 oil crisis was in response to an embargo imposed by OPEC (led by our ally the Shah of Iran) as a result of a perceived tilt by the Europeans towards Israel in the Yom Kippur War in Sept. In 1979 the shortage/crisis was in response to the overthrow of the Shah (see above) by Islamist radicals led by the Ayatollah Khomeini. In some repects Carter threw the Shah under the bus. Iran stopped oil exports for awhile, US diplomats were taken hostage and oil went up due to speculation and a "jitters" premium. (a note, we're talking like to 85 or 90 cents a gallon).

Okay, conspire with me for a minute. Let's think about our government. Lets think about our media. Let's think about our perception of what is fact, versus what actually happens in our country.

Lets assume for a moment that we purchased a national forest for the purpose of drilling oil and with the perfect understanding that the thing was brimming with crude. Now lets assume that, as the government of the most powerful nation in the history of the world, we have control over the media and its effect on popular opinion. And finally, lets assume that the nation we govern is in the middle of a sure-fire, come-to-Jesus financial crisis, and that said crisis is a result of grossly elevated oil prices.

Why wouldn't we drill? Why wouldn't we suspend any environmental controls which would prohibit it and open any necessary refineries? Why would we refuse to stop the chaos immediately?

For the record, I am a firm believer that politicians on the right and politicians on the left get along much better than they let on. Its the commoners like me who become passionate about their politics. As for the rest of them, they already know in advance how things will come down, and they give and take to make sure that both the interests of their constituents are not publicly compromised and that things come out the way the whole of them expect them to. That's why the president veto's bills knowing that congress will override the veto. Its a matter of public opinion and making a good show. That's why we have the electoral college. They exist so that the retards who are too stupid to make decisions for the country can't affect the outcome, but think that they can. Thats also why we are continually driven towards gun control. We wouldn't want the handy-tarded common folk to start believing both that they had a cause worth fighting for and were well equipped to do it.

So, I believe that the government or some faction therein has a solid solution to this energy crisis and already knows how the situation will most likely play out. I also believe that they'll keep us idiotic commoners in the dark until the matter is concluded or is so botched that there is no solution. I just wonder what they have up their sleeve this time.
Smell that? Smells like sumthin died in here.
