The reason for this meeting was the source of controversy. If
Saddam was trying to restart his nuke development, he needed a source of uranium that was not under surveillance. Joe Wilson initial supported the British intelligence that Saddam had put feelers out for trade with Niger. Maybe Iraq was just looking to buy some cowpeas.
They did cover up a lot of the details about Saddam's many violations that were proven. They had WMD programs and supported terrorists, just never proven they had stockpiles of WMDs or specificially supported Al Qaeda. This wasn't one of those cases.
