4 Inch 1911 for a Carry Wpn?

Postby lumpy2181 » Sat May 01, 2010 7:42 pm

Hey guys, I have been thinking of getting a carry weapon and I like the 1911's. I have shot all the sizes and I like the 4" models best. Does anyone carry these? Is there a good holster for these? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

WOW 300+ views and no one commented. Does anyone carry a 1911 at all? I know a lot of you have them. Just curious of how well they do for carry weapons. Thanks everyone.

most good carry guns are 20oz. or less. most 1911s are 30 some odd oz. with that said i know a lot of people would only carry there 1911s. i no in a firefight id want one. i just cant imagine trying to hide it and carrying that weight

Personally I like the 5" but that is what I am more familiar with. If you are looking to use it for a CCW than I would lean more toward the 4" just for the size reason. As for holsters I would not know but I would look into something around the lines of a holster that can go inside of the waistband so you are not protruding as much as you would if it was on the out side. But it all comes down to comfurt and what you want for your self.

There are several options for a 4" 1911 carry holster that run from a few bucks to a couple hundred. You can look at Fobus, Galco, Don Humme, Ross, Safariland, DeSantis, Crossbreed and many others. Your options are limited only by the features, style (IWB/OWB, open vs thumbreak, full vs strap, etc) and price you want to pay. I do know that for IWB carry a Crossbreed is tough to beat as far as comfort and concealability.

I carry a 3" 1911 and hardly know it is there. The only difference between my UC II and a 4" commander is the weight and slide length- the grips are the same so they are both easy to conceal. Personally I like the 3" as it is more comfortable to conceal the shorter slide (especially IWB) and a few ounces lighter- but the 4" is a good size as well. Just make sure you wring it out with a variety of CCP ammo to assure reliable cycling as short slide 1911's can sometimes be finicky.

I don't carry a 1911, but I do carry a 4 1/4" full size S&W M&P .40 and don't find it any less comfortable than any other gun. After you're used to carrying it, you forget about it being on your hip. When and if I ever need to draw my gun, I want a real gun, not a pea shooter. The little bit of extra weight is worth bearing. As for a Holster, mine came from Tennessee Holster Company in,,, you guessed it,,, Tennessee.

I carried a full size for a little while, and while it was easy to conceal I didn't like how it jabbed my leg.

I'm a fan of the 1911 platform and carry a 3.5" Para Ordnance c7.45 LDA off duty. On duty its my shorty's big brother, a Para Ordnance P.14 LDA. I have carried both concealed in the past but like the 3.5" over the full size for off duty/court purposes. Yeah, it weighs more than a Glock but I like the trigger break a lot more on the Para.

I carry a 4-inch 1911 and conceal it just fine. I'm a pretty big guy 6'1" 240 so you may have issues if you're a littler guy. In my experience any weapon is comfortable to carry with a high quality holster that carries it correctly. I like them to ride high and tight on the waist so they dont stick out obviously a plus for ccw but also so they don't slap around during movement. I've carried smaller guns which is fine but I like shooting a gun not a handle and a tube that roughly point a bullet in the direction you aim. I've had great luck with galco small of back and kombat master holsters as well as blackhawk holsters. They are both top of the line. I'm also a firm believer that no one holster is perfect and you may need several for different activities. Also a vertical shoulder holster is very comfortable and concealable.

personally i'd skip the 1911. a definite advantage to it is the slim width, as far as concealment goes. disadvantages? seems like i hear more reliability issues out of new 1911s of any brand than any other typical firearm (not including junk like lorcin, hi-point, etc), and the low round count in a magazine.

I carried a 4" (Commander) size Kimber Eclipse Pro-II for a long time and it was way toi heavy. If I had it to do it over again I would go with a light weight 3" (Officer) size 1911.

I carry a 4" 1911 everyday and have no issues at all with it. The most important thing to carrying a 1911 or any other gun is a good belt and holster, This is one area you do not want to skimp on. I personally like to carry OWB because i'm a big guy and dont need to any more to pants size. I carry useing a Wilderness belt and a Tucker HF1 holster and forget my 1911 is even there. Less capacity in a 1911 yes, but what are the odds you will ever have to use your firearm for self defense anyways. Work on your SA and you will be able to keep yourself out of most situations anyways.

I too carry a 4" 1911 everyday. the right holster and belt make all the difference. Mine is an aluminum frame so its a bit lighter than the normal steel. I carry it in a galco king tuk at my 5'oclock an its not really an bother.

its a good choice.

I carry a Wilson Combat 4 inch. Conceals well. Never an issue in anyway. Due to the slim frame it conceals easier than my glock 26.

I carry a Kimber ultra covert II with a 3" barrel in. 45 and love it I put it in a cross breed holster and forget it's there. I like the cross breed because I can tuck a dress shirt in around it and you will never know it's there. The 1911has a nice slim frame and that's the one I prefer to carry. I have carried other CCW pistols and used other holsters and so far my favorite combo is the Kimber and the cross breed.

I carry the SA 1911 GI Champion Model. I love it for a carry gun. I used a blade-tech IWB holster for it. Wouldn't trade it for the world.
