chessie pups changing fur shades.

Postby buckmeister » Fri Nov 06, 2009 9:39 pm

Its been a long time since we had a thread talking about Chessies around here so I thought I would ask some of you brown dog owners what color changes your Peake pups went through, when and if did their fur get lighter or darker. Right now my males is the color of the top of a cattail, I wish he would stay that color but I hear they usually darken up. what are your observations?

i've been hunting over chesapeakes all my hunting life and i have noticed they do change colors quite a bit according to the time of the year...My dogs only 7 months old right now and he has definitely darkened up quite a bit....typically in the summer they will get quite a bit lighter, depending on the dog...my uncles dog usually gets pretty light in the summer months almost to the point i didn't recognize her when she was younger.

I've observed actual permanent color changes in Deadgrass shades (from LDG to DG) pups but in my experience not so much in Brown. I've heard of drastic real color changes (Brown to DG) but I've personally never seen it.

Whenever Kodi goes into a shed cycle (which seems to be every 3 months)  His coat appears to get lighter.
Nothing like a bird in the hand and Chesapeake beside you with ice on his coat while the snow blows in from the north!

Sun exposure, salt or chlorinated water and temperature seems to have an affect on Jaz's coat. She's got several shades of hairs mixed in besides being dark brown and lighter brown on her shoulders. When she was younger I thought she was going to have a shorter (not so curly) coat. Now that she's three it's quite long and wavy. But, it's very close to being wool - I was rubbing on her last winter in the dark and could see static electricity sparks in her hair.

I was waiting for you to comment wack - the first and only mamoth Chessie. BTW - have you seen any of her litter mates? I'd be interested in knowing what they look like. She looks like some of those 1st chessies in the Carol Creek book.

Cindy who is now 14 years is all wite in face and down the front, She was always dead grass . Gus is brown with a white star hes 9 mo right now hes winter coat is comming in and it appears to be showing signs of lightining up, My son just picked up a 7 week old pup, He named her Sadie Shes light Dead Grass but I dont thing she is going to stay that way. She has a much darker fuzz over the Light Dead Grass we will see what happens as she gets older

Sniper went from a very dark brown as a pup to light brown with a little deadgrass on his shoulder and hocks.

Wow I can hardly see the Star . Gus is 9 Mo now and has a beuty on his chest, thats the first I've heard of that happening. I hope he dosen't loose his. Cindy who is 14 has been growing whiter and whiter on her face for years now its spreding to her ears and down her front legs. It could be worse, she could be going bald like her owner.

Hey man, can you share a bit about your pup's pedigree - there is a strain of chessies that have the long snout - I've seen a few here and there and I'm curious.

tks,
