In all seriousness though, I think you should probably just read up on both breeds. A lab will be easier to train the majority of the time and running off depends on how well your dog minds you and can happen with any breed.

Forget about those two choices. You want a poodle. Very intelligent.

Definitely a chessie. If you do decide to get a chocolate lab, you'll have to hunt over a plond to get it to retrieve your birds ...... chocolate labs don't like to get wet.

L&L,..some Chocolates may not like to get wet, but there are some HUGE advantages..

I have a chocolate so am partial to them, although if I lived in other areas, hunted bigger water I might want a chessie. This is a ford/chevy, miller/bud question. Do some homework and decide for yourself instead of having us decide for you. Also every dog presents challenges in training, can run off on you (if you don't train it).

Since he has one post and will probably never return I'm just going to hijack his thread so I don't have to start a new one. I'm looking for a new dog but it's going to be a year or so. Like most people I'm torn between a chessie and lab. I've read and seen the pros and cons of both breeds and I know each owner has their own opinion.

I myself have a GSP but don't routinely hunt him with ducks because of breed limitations and mine but that's another story. I've attended multiple HRC events in the past and watched both breeds run and been to a few NAVDHA events. I've reviewed multiple programs and have majority of them already and he/she will be sent off when it's time.

Well when I was at our local DU banquet I was introduced to someone who is big in the HT scene for our area and got to talking to him and asked his opinion and without a second thought he said don't get a chessie. I asked why and his only response was you can't handle one and they are to difficult. Now everyone on here has seen the arguements but are they really that difficult to where one should completely write them off because you haven't owned a "retriever" or worked a chessie? Just curious since his opinion really won't affect my decision.
You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas.

your best bet would be to research both breeds. You will get many different answers on here, good luck with whichever you choose

Absolutely nothing!

You see, you have to work your way up to a yellow ..... so it makes sense that the greenhorns start with a black or a chocolate, but hopefully they eventually see the light and make the step up to yella. :hi:

Takes a beast-master to run a chocolate dog. Why...he eats yellows for breakfast and expels them holding a duck. Walks on water, even in real water. And for a snack - he opens ju-ju bags from Louisiana and snorts the contents.

I always thought for big open water and icey conditions a seal would be perfect.(chocolate of course). The circus showbiz types don't have any trouble training em. The Navy even uses them.

Force fetch a seal? Interesting. I don't think an e-collar would stay on a seal very well however.

Seals look like biters to me-

I fell into my brown dog sort of by accident, and I have to say she has grown on me. My next one may be brown, too. She blends in like crazy in the shadows, its amazing.
