Professional trainer near NW Ohio - any suggestions?

Postby Copper mushroom » Fri Nov 01, 2013 6:48 pm

Have spent the past six months absorbing as much information as I can about waterfowling with a four legged companion. My crew and I did a lot of research and picked up our lab pup two weeks ago. The pups comes from a very long line of proven performers so I am 99% sure he has the brains to become the dog my kids, wife, and I hope for.

The problem is me - I have never trained a retriever before. I believe the best thing I can do is find a reputable trainer and hook up with them and learn as much as I can first hand.

Who would recommend and/or anyone to stay away from?

Looking roughly 4hrs or closer from Toledo.

If it helps, our goal is a goose/duck dog first and possibly work upland as he gets some experience.

Thanks

I'm taking it you want a gun dog and not a trial dog based on your info.?.
My trainer is up that way, PM me and ill give you their contact info. His son may be willing to take on clients as well. They've been doing it for 35+ years and aren't advertising wh**es but are VERY well know!

Jim, clint, and the daugther all have a chesapeake from me. They also have another chesapeake from me heading out that way in feb.

Jims dad was also a pro. I think he had around 23 FC's.

loady, Cruz, and Rogue are all sired by my male Thor.

Not sure if you saw the one dog Grace that Clint was training. She was also sired by my male Thor. Clint got her end of March and she had her JH by end of May.

Yes Sir! My pup was up there from June thru late Aug. We are actually going to go back up for a training day and euro shoot later this month.

To the OP, congrats on your new pup and good luck finding a trainer, sounds like a good one has already been mentioned. Just keep in mind that no matter how good of a trainer you send you pup to it will only come home with the foundation of a gun dog. You will have to have the dedication to continue to build off that foundation so that you and the pup become a team. Travel up and spend as much time with your pup and trainer as you can so that you learn to use those tools. This will be as much of a learning experience for you as it is for the pup. Handling a dog is a lot more difficult than the pro’s make it look in the videos. Let your trainer give you the foundation to become a good handler as well and you will find a whole new side to dog ownership that most people never knew existed. Again congratulations on your new pup and enjoy the ride your going to have a blast.

Thanks for the replies - I will be contacting those mentioned above to discuss the training. Probably the most exciting thing for me here is that the kids will be sharing in the journey. They are 7 & 8 and have been tagging along to the goose blinds for three years now and enjoy every minute; having 'their' pup Sturm along will add to the enjoyment.
