It seems like every winter I grapple with options of how to keep my english pointer warm when it gets extremely cold. I hace tried almost everything and still when it gets really cold, he seems to be uncomfortable. Curious to get your ideas.

Get an old type standard bulb socket and light bulb and mount it inside the dog house. If it gets really cold hang a piece of carpet across the dog house opening. This keeps Bella's dog house around 40 degrees in super cold weather and 60 degrees when it is starting to freeze up in my area.

If you are talking about hunting conditions. A tight vest is a must for dogs that get cold easily. Followed by taking a break from hunting every now and then. I like running the dog on shore to warm them up and loosen their muscles. When Bella starts to actually shake a tiny bit or her teeth chatter just a bit, we take a break. I run her on the beach near where we are anchored. Running her a bit and giving her some snacks usually takes care of the cold issue. Another option is making the effort to bring a propane heater and use it. We run a couple in the boat. Bella knows when to say enough and come in the blind to lay down and warm up.

During hunting a vest that does not rub his under legs. But, most time with mine I don't worry too much about it while hunting.

Dog house?

There is a person in Sugar Creek MO near KC. Pro-built is the name of his business. Been around a long time. Order one of his boxes with a door of some sort (the door options). I have 3 of them and they keep my EP's toasty as can be and it got to 9 degrees last night and a -7 windchill. They came out of the houses this morning feeling warm to the touch. Stuck my hand in and it was warm inside.

Use prairie hay NOT straw. Straw breaks down flat after a short while (hours) and provides no insulation qualities. Dogs like to bed down and make a nest of sort. Straw just pushes off to the side providing nothing under the dog to lay on. Prairie hay will intertwine with itself and not push aside. And they can push it up in front of the door to block wind as well. Prairie hay is the only stuff to use.

Change out bedding once or twice a week.
