Does your dog retrieve beer??

Postby B.E.Nelli » Wed Jan 15, 2014 10:57 pm

In the process of teaching my pup to do this while its still cold outside. Gives us a little break from the little training we can do indoors. Anyone ever done this?

So far I have a tennis ball on 550 cord tied to the fridge handle. With the door open she is 100% at getting the beer to me on command. With the door closed, it takes her a bit to get enough traction on the linoleum to open it, but she does it. The hang up is after she gets the door open, she runs around the door to get the beer. Problem is the tennis ball is still in her mouth, so as she runs around the door she slams it shut. Haha, and so the circle begins. Any ideas how to get her to drop the ball immediately after the door opens?

This is way harder than any bird training, but will be totally worth it in the end ;)

Mine would bite through the can/drop the bottle. He loves beer to the point he is a jackass while someone is drinking one he wants it so bad.

It took two explosions before I got smart and put a koozie on it. Problem solved. My kitchen smells like lite beer now though haha.

A friend used a towel tied to the door handle, which I'd not think Pup as apt to hang onto. Had his putting empties in the trash, too.

I never got past fetching cold drinks from a cooler.
If you think I'm wrong, you might be right.

Haha, very cool. I do such training during the summer when too hot for anything else. The beer will be coming this year. Taz has a very strong search and retrieve of the remote right now, last summers training was a success.

You have to break it down into steps.

Step 1. Opening the door. STOP. Praise on compliance
Step 2. Dropping the ball. STOP. Praise on compliance
Step 3. Associate beer with beer. How do you have this separated for the dog to know beer vs other stuff in the fridge?
Step 4. Fetch Beer. STOP. Praise on compliance
Step 5. Closing the door. STOP. Praise on compliance
Step 6. Bringing the beer to you. STOP. Enjoy a cold refreshing gulp of the good stuff.

But now that you have made it ok for the dog to open the fridge door...
I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in.

I taught my dog to pick up and bring a beer to me, but our refrigerator has the cutout in the door to open it rather than a handle so there is no way to attach a towel or ball for her to grab to open the door  Luckily, after about 5-10 years of marriage I was able to get my wife to retrieve a beer for me on command.

Looks like fun.

So many training opportunities - so little time!

Yea, Mine didn't care too much for the ear pinch, but she got through it and is a dandy at retrieving things now.

You have to use a different technique to account for the species variation. I found a butt pinch or slap, yielded a more favorable response than the ear pinch.

After just a training session last night and one over lunch break I have her doing it perfectly. Gotta figure out how to load the video off of my phone!

And Rick the towel trick was just the ticket. Fixed my little hiccup.

Brother tried this once... Dog out smarted him though. His lab enjoyed a spiral ham one day while he was at work. That was the end of that trick although it did work great for awhile.
