Question for any vet on here

Postby Rubber Hook » Sat Mar 01, 2014 10:39 pm

I have a question for any vet or similar who has to deal with deceased pets. I'm a firefighter and we had a house fire where the 2 family dogs perished. The homeowner couldn't be reached so animal control took the deceased pets to the pound until the homeowner could be reached. The owner was reached 4 hours after the fire was out. We wrapped the dogs up in sheets and animal control doesn't have anything other than black hefty trash bags to put the pets in. I think its very insensitive for the owner after having to deal with their house gone and going to the pound to pick up their beloved pets sitting in a trash bag. Anyway I was appalled to see how these owners were going to have see their pets as my dog is more than a animal but a member of our family and I would be upset to see her in a trash bag. Where would I be able to buy a few pet body bags that look professional to store on our fire engine? The ones we have for people are vinyl with a zipper and looking for something similar. I'm just going to buy these myself to put on the engine. Looking for brand, model and where an individual can buy them from.
Thanks

Thinking the last one I had put down was delivered by my Vet in a black bag as you described. Albeit not your average Hefty bag. Mainly as dogs get frozen quickly upon departing; how they are laid will determine in what shape they freeze solid and that's rarely 'stretched out'.

Personally i wasn't offended, the dog was gone. Nice thinking though about the owner though.

Just use an old blanket instead. If the pet is small enough, use an old towel.

Go to your high end mens clothing store and see if they will sell you some of the bags your high dollar suit would come in.

Don't know if pet body bags exist but if so I don't know anyone that uses them. The standard is to wrap in an old towel/blanket and put in a big black garbage bag or box (if the dog is small enough to fit). Make sure you double bag because bags can tear or leak. If you are worried about how the owners are going to react, just let them know ahead of time what to expect. If you say the dogs are being safely stored in a big bag for them and you'd be happy to help carry the bag to their car, the owners usually will be appreciative.

They do make them. I'll check for you. I just got some from my vet for my brother's dog that died. There were blue ones, or tan ones with paw prints that said something nice on them like "Always in our heart" etc.

I hope someday someone remembers this old dog with kindness and gives me to a puppy.
