Duck Dog Names

Postby southern_mallards » Tue Mar 04, 2014 6:17 pm

Well I have my puppy and all his AKC Reg and all his grand sires and grand dams names all the way back to 6 generations. I named him "River". But what i found out when i was looking at his grand sires and dams is that they all have really unique names. So i was just wanting some ideas on a unique name for him. I would also like to hear other unique names of your own duck dogs.

Additional info on the dog is its a male 8 week old black lab. And his great great grand sire is "Ebonstar Lean Mac".

First pup was Suttons Honey Macey "Macey"
Im a beekeeper hence the name.

Our lab now is Suttons Mizzou Journey " journey"
Went to Missouri to get her and made a weekend vacation out of it.

I've seen some really creative ideas do names on the forums.

I will said that is one hell of a bloodline . Lean Mac is one of the most successful field trial bloodlines of all time . Good luck with a name . I try too pick one the fits the dogs character myself .

He's very calm and doesn't always play with our other dogs (yorkies) but he's very good at the first few obedience commands (sit and stay) and he definetly only retrieves things that he wants. LIke toys, he could care less about a duck wing.

IMO - just advice...try and come up with your own name. It's a personal thing. You can do it - just takes effort and reflection. It's your dog. Plenty of examples out there, perhaps you can visit the OFA site with your dogs (or parents) AKC numbers and look at previous and siblings. Have no idea what happened after great great grandsire so hopefully you'll see something.

BTW - I'd be more apt to pin dogs MUCH closer than 4/5 generations to a dogs name.

Would be interesting to run a reverse pedigree on Lean Mac and see how many great-great-grandpuppies are out there. Maybe not up there with the national debt, but surely a whopper.

As for the name, there's no great hurry to register him and something will crop up that catches your fancy. Much better something personal than what we might come up with.

Yea, I didn't think with it being his great great granddaddy that it would make him outstanding. I've heard plenty of stories about first generation pups from champion sires that never retrieved a thing. But I don't plan on entering him in any field trials when he's grown nor do I have any high expectations for him to win championships or anything like that. I just want him to be by my side hugging a cypress tree when 20+ Mallard come in.

Rick, just the direct AI breedings of Mac would fill a good size towns phone book. I have been out of the game for a while, is there any harvested semen still frozen some where?

I was thinking something like "Hughes' Black River" or "Hughes' Sable River"
Hughes, my last name. Black, his color. River, his name. and Sable is just a synonym for black meaning very dark.
Or maybe in time I could find an adjective that describes him.

Think on it as I know more than a few guys that "Had no interest in Hunt Tests or Field Trials" and then figured out they needed training help via a club. Then decided they enjoyed it. Then decided it best to train and run a dog.

Seems a little silly when the dogs name is read by the judge and it's Goober Wallowitz. Like it was a human child not a working dog. :lol3:

Once had a marshal call for "Woodpile" when a couple MIA handlers moved us up in the order. Don't know why he didn't use my name or Peake, aka: the coyote's, number and guess it was the best he could do with "Coyote In The Woodpile".

Broke back mountain river has a nice ring to it.
