Decoy Setup help

Postby jag11 » Sat Feb 15, 2014 9:40 pm

I am located in north Florida, and just finished my 3rd season of duck hunting. Now getting where I can do it on my own just bought a boat. Mostly the divers on the lakes around me are ringnecks, bluebills, canvas's, and an occasional red head. I don't mind shooting an early woodrow either. I have quite a few ring neck decoys along with some mallard and woodies. Is it even necessary to put the mallards out there? And whats the best idea to putting the bull necks out there? I heard one big circle with a few stragglers or two small circles. Let't hear yall's advice of how I should set up my spread.

If there are Mallards in the area you are hunting, then I would use the Mallard decoys. I keep my puddle duck decoys away from my diver spread (about 25 yards or so). I like to leave holes in the puddle duck spread for the birds to try to land. I run my diver spread in a line with a J or hook at the end. This might not work for every one but it works well for me.
