Who pours their own egg weights?

Postby Cajun1085 » Thu Jul 18, 2013 7:07 pm

I have a about 3-4 dozen lead strap weights that I would like to turn into egg weights. Please PM if you are interested in converting them for me and if so how much. Of course I'll pay for shipping to and from and your time.

If you have access to a melting pot you can do your own. Not quite egg shape, more cylinder shape but they work great and I have never had any issues with them not sliding or anything.

Take a 1 inch pipe and split it down the middle with a metabo ( so you have 2 seperate chunks). Cut it in about a inch or inch and a half long. Take 2x6 about a foot long, Drill 1 inch holes in the 2x6 about half way through. Tap a 16 penny nail in the center, pour the lead. Let it cool 10 min and your done. The nail pulls right out, pulls even easier if you do it when its still good and warm with a pair of side cuts. My mold I did has 12 places set up on it.

I did 60 of them last season for a buddy in less than a hour. All of my decoys are rigged this way and have been for 4-5 years.

You could also just just get a muffin pan and melt the lead in the oven. It's not an oval but it doesn't matter to me.

For around 80 dollars you can buy the stuff needed to make them. That way as you lose them or need more you can cast your own.

Look on Amazon for a Do-It mold of your liking and a melt pot.

I took and old cast iron pot to melt the lead and a cheap soup ladle to pour it. We bought a 4oz egg sinker mold online at some kind of fishing supply surplus. Worked out well for the most part.

I melt my lead on an old camp stove in a soup can. Ever so often I have to replace the can I simply just melt the lead and pour into a new can. I use a pair of pliers to hold the can with. Kind of backwoods I know.
