Postby glen1978 » Fri Oct 25, 2013 6:09 pm

Lookin at what kind of life jackets you guys are wearing. Will be huntin with a youngin out of a Stealth 2000 boat this year. Tryin to figure oit the best setup to use. Ive seen the waistband ones and also seen the inflatable ones. Want something thats not gona hinder LOP or get in the way of my hand muffs or just be cumbersome period. Lemme know whats workin for yall.

The inflate ones are great. I used one all summer fishing and hardly knew it was on. I was told that you dont want to put them on onder your coat.

I've got the same one. Wear it fishing all the time in the boat and rarely remember its there. I am not a fan of the waist ones.

I was wondering who uses them duck hunting. I can see them in the summer with a tshirt on but what about winter when your all bundled up?

Also whats recommended for kids? The inflatables are illegal for kids from what Im reading.

The inflatable life jackets will not fully inflate at cold temperatures. They run on CO2 which will freeze up. Spend some money and get a quality kayaking life jacket.

It gets below 20 here on on occasion. Hmm....well figured the inflatable was gona be the way to go. But on the he other hand I would figure some inflation would be better than none.

Inflatable would be fine for most of your hunting. Just make sure one it drops below to have class 3 jacket on. Nothing like taking a fall and having to swim with an improperly inflated life jacket.

I dont wana have $300 bucks tied up in life jackets. There has to be a do all jacket out there that works for duck hunting and I dont have to worry about if I picked the 19 degree day to go out and fall in or the 23 degree day.

Looking for a do it all life jacket get a kayak life jacket and be done. I paddle all day and hardly know that I have it on. You can get one brand new for a 100 bucks. Maybe cheaper. Inflatables are about the same price and then if you use it then it needs to be reloaded.

I bought the ninja green out of season for 99 bucks. There are a ton of other companies that sell them. I am sure most of them are good. Good luck.

I use the cool mesh life jackets also. I put it on before my jacket when hunting in my kayak and never take it off. I also have another one that is thinner and still has mesh on the shoulder. You have to find the ones with mesh or made for summer use and there are lots of them available now with kayak fishing becoming so popular.

With the vest under my jacket when I run into the warden he always thinks I am without a lifevest and ticket time, but he's always disappointed when I unzip my jacket. Plus it adds tons of warmth under the jacket in the winter.

And there are others out there.

I use a the Sterns camo belt style flotation device. It is the manual pull cord and not the auto inflate. I put it on and basically forget about it. I also put a flint and striker right on the belt, just in case.

I use to use the auto inflate style, but waded in too deep once and forgot I had it on, talk about a surprise. Also once those go off, they restrict a lot of movement.
