Google Earth

Postby yellodog1 » Tue Sep 20, 2005 9:24 pm

Has anybody tried GooglE Earth for their hunting spots? Its a lot like sattelite imaging, but far superior. I ahvent used it for my hunting places, but I can see my house in color, really close up.

The free version has been working fine for me for a few months now, I have been using it to find new spots as well. Just hope you have a fast internet connection or it will be slow. Maps.google.com is a good way to access the same images without installing any programs, but the interface is a little rougher.

google maps is pretty cool, but they don't have all the images i need. they seem to only have images in and around the denser populated areas. (in my region anyway, haven't tried everywhere.)

the imagery in my area isn't very good on either or. i can't find any maps from anywhere where you can zoom in close enough to see any detail on someone's house. how are y'all doing that?

I downloaded Google Earth a couple of weeks ago and have been playing around with it. It doesn't have very good resolution for my area. I've found that it's easier to work than TerraSever, but Terra has better resolution for spots that are out in the middle of nowhere.

How often do they renew the satallite pic. I was looking in google maps and the area I hunt showed more water than what is actually there.

Yeah, TerraServer does lack a little on updating their satellite images. Most for my area is mid to late 1990's. Hunting right off the Arkansas River the scenery will change considerably if we get any sort of high water.

To download Google Earth go to google.com.
Click on "more".
Click on "Earth" towards the bottom left of the screen.
Click on "Google Earth Free Version" in the upper right of the screen.
If your system matches the requirements click on "I'm good. Download GoogleEarth.exe"
It should start downloading then.

That is the coolest thing I have ever seen. I love the way you can change the angle of your view and basically fly into your favorite duck lake as if you were cupped and committed. Awesome.

It is so much better than Terra Server that it is beyond words.

I can also see why some of my competition does so well. They have sweet set ups.

Thanks for sharing this spectacular find.

I have no idea how the technology works, but the images are from varying dates, and are all linked together. Some areas are green (spring or summer) and then right next door, you will see snow on the ground. That aside, it is an awesome tool for exploring new areas. I wish I would have had this tool when we were first looking for some hunting ground.

As for updates, it shows our duck club before we expanded the wooded wetland area, so I would say that image is about two years old. Terra Servers most recent image is the early 90s.

I probably spent about two hours flying around this weekend. When I showed my two hunting partners, they were like the "orgasm guy" on Saturday Night Live
