870 Express - black matte rust. Solution?

Postby Ferrealls » Tue Oct 27, 2009 3:37 pm

I bought a new Remington 870 Express Super Mag this year. As I've read, rust has been a big issue for these. And as I've experienced, rust is a big issue. This gun, in spite of being two months old, is rusting worse than anything I have ever owned. I clean it regularly, yet it can rust while I'm still sitting in the blind. I don't want to send it out to get parkerized, because a $200 coating on a $400 gun is ridiculous. Not too mention the fact that I'm in Alaska, and I'd be without a gun for the rest of the season. Has anyone come up with a solution? I'm debating breaking it down and just spray painting the receiver and barrel with rustoleum flat black paint. Any other ideas?

Wax everything metal with a couple of coats of car wax.You can also wipe it off with lemonoil furniture polish when you put it away.Ihave used lemon oil on my guns for years including two 870 express's ,and have never had a rust problem. Not for cleaning, just towipe off a dry gun.If you use lemon oil do the whole gun.

I've had good success with rem oil. While it doesn't work too great on moving parts it does good preventing exterior rust. I apply it by totally saturating the exterior until the gun looks wet but do not wipe off excess, then let it sit overnight. By the next morning it will have a rainbow look to it and basically be dry. This seems to work best on a matte finish.

I use this method on a nef black matte turkey gun. I work every day and hunt before work, so if I turkey hunt in the rain (and I do frequently) the gun gets disassembled and allowed to air dry only. I usually reapply after about 3 rains if the gun gets really wet.

I just use breakfree on mine, have had no rust problems. It must work, I have 36 guns of all types and brands and have never had a rust problem with any of them.

The only real solution is to paint it, I have had my Express painted for years and with zero rust, clean the surfaces well with gun scrubber or Brake clean then hit it with a good primer then Flat Black and you will have no more rust. Just dont paint any moving parts or the Mag. tube. The up side is it will look better and if you scratch it or mug it up just hit it with a light coat again and it is back to new! Up until last year I hunted all over the Palmer Hay Flats and tore them UP!

My old remington rusted out of the box.

http://www.corrosionx.com/gun_use.html

You can get this at Midway USA or maybe brownells, but it was about the only gun oil that slowed down the rusting on my 1187. I don't think you can actually stop it from rusting, since it has that pitted finish that just holds onto moisture. I got rid of mine, b/c it was a POS, but my original plan was to refinish it after the rust got unbearably bad.

I have a super mag 870 that had rust on the bottom end of the barrel near the reciever end right out of the box.. their finishing jobs are a joke anymore. I would say just paint it like others have said, no need to spend 200 on a parker job when you can spend like 15 on spray paint and do a decent home camo job.

Ya any the finish that remington has is awful. They will literally start to rust halfway through the hunt. My buddy has one and it will do it every time we are in damp areas. I think there are two solutions to your problem one either oil the gun to death after every hunt which will still probably show a little rust or paint it. If you look up top of the guns forum you will see a sticky called steps to painting your own shotgun. Click on it and check out what stumpjumper has done and how many other guys have to. I tried it and after two or three seasons it is still holding up great. CHeck it out

I have been hunting a 870 express super mag for about 5 years. it's the synthetic stock and flat black metal.

I beat the hell out of this gun. sitting in the rain, throwing it in the boat, and going swimming in duck ponds.

I clean it out with gun scrubber, coat it with rem oil. I use the remingtion dri-lube on the trigger mechanism.

never any rust. I can't imagine exposing this gun to harsher conditions that it has already seen.

Mix salt water and Rem's SP finish and it will rust as you look at it.
I've steel wooled mine so often it's just brown metal now,.. much better, lol

If you buy the cheapest product a Company sells you will get the cheapest gun they sell, If you spend Only $250.00 on a gun thats what you are going to get, in the case of the Express models Remington has cut every corner to save a buck, Loose actions, poor Feeding, Plastic trigger groups and crappy finish. If the 870 was not one of the best designs ever created for a pump the guns would be worthless.
The Wingmasters do not have the issues mentioned on this post if given any care at all, They are two entirly different guns that use the same design. But Remington has insisted on trying to sell Wingmasters at inflated prices so the sales are slow, Driving a nail in the coffin of the Wingmaster just like the 11-87 Premier.
If Remington could only catch a clue and do a few updates the the Wingmaster like stocks shims and spacers! back bore the barrel something anything! they could distinguish it from the Express and revive a great gun! and maybee just maybee justify the price they are asking!
Well thats my rant

I just purchased a 20 ga. compact 870 to carry on scouting missions.
It's very light, very small, and very cheap.
I had a buddy powdercoat all the metal before even using it.
After seeing what happens to a less expensive Rem when it touches
morning dew in the marsh.
So far no issues and its getting abused I show it no mercy. But
thats what I bought it for.
Paint,Powder coat, Gun coat,Dura coat..anything is better than how they come.

I have a 870 supermag in camo and it doesn't have a rust problem at all. I am pretty rough on it. It gets left wet and dirty all the time. But I do stick it in my gun safe that has one of those rem dri pouches in it.

I just bought a new 870 Express Super mag.

The action is tight, feeds perfect, the camo finish is great and the trigger group is steel, not plastic.

So for a real solution to your problem coat the outside of the gun with BoreButter. Its for muzzle loaders and works excellent. Clean gun with wd40 on the outside wipe off then coat with bore butter wipe off excess and wala rust free. I do mine 2 times a season. You may need more due to salt water but I have had no rust problems at all since using this method.

I know this is on 870s.....but I have a benelli supernova that is somewhat of a rust bucket. The mag tube rusted pretty bad after getting rained on in the afternoon and cleaned out the following morning (yes I suppose I should have cleaned it and lubed it that day, but a supernova isn't cheap for a pump and I'd expect it to perform better than that! ) Anyway, the spots where the rib mounts onto the barrel are starting to show rust. I'm probably just drentch the thing in RemOil and see how that works.

Nobody likes an 870 better than I do, BUT the Express is what it is. Cheap(and functional). As stated earlier, the corners have been cut to make it more widely marketable price-wise. Still, mine has been a great gun that I don't baby - at all. It would rust quickly just like all the others. I put a Krylon camo job on mine every two or three years, works fine and no rust.

Ok, well I had to say something. i have an 870 Express that I have hunted chukar with in sand storms, dropped in a pond duckhunting, caked in disgusting mud, in snow and rain. Its seen more moisture than I would have liked it to but thats hunting. After everytime I take it in the feild I clean it and coat the exterior in a conditioner. After 4 seasons with it I still do not have a single fleck of rust to speak of. Perhaps I got lucky, but take care of the gun and it will show. As for rust out of the box, send it back :fingerhead:

Best solution is to take it to the pawn shop and put the money you get out of it towards something else.

Paint it. Every couple years just spray on another coat.

I just got a used one this year with the exact problem, I thought about the paint but wont the metal still rust under the paint? I was told that once rust starts, you cant get rid of it. I like the gun but hate rust! Ive been cleaning mine every couple of days with Remoil and rubbing it hard with a rag and cant tell Ive helped it at all!
