Remington's Newest Auto " Versamax"

Postby greyson1 » Sat Jul 10, 2010 2:22 pm

Well, they're talking about it elsewhere. So does anyone know a little more about it than this? Remington's new gas system auto-loading shotgun venture. Supposed to shoot 7/8oz - 3.5" big boys & supposed to retail for $1,599.

I would not be the first one to own it.

$ 1599.00, good luck with that being as they havent made a good auto in over 20 years. Trying to compete with Benelli, Beretta, and Browning in that market niche will be a HUGER mistake !!

After the massive failure of their last firearm, I just can't see how they got a new design and tested it so fast. Lots of folks are going to be very leary (myself included) of any remington auto. With the price tag I'd rather buy a Beretta and get quality that I know I can count on. The Remington lifesaver is the 870. I just wish they would improve them and they could corner that end of the market instead of trying to get into a new one firmly held by Beretta, Benelli, and Browning.
Just say no to internet scouters.

This is going to be very interesting. Lets hope its better than the 105cti or whatever they were trying to sell last time around. Its going to take one hell of a die hard Remington fan to pull the trigger on this shotgun.

Word from the grapevine (please take with a grain of NaCl) that this is going to be an inertia model, knockoff of benelli.

What I read elsewhere is that they have been working on this for quite a while now. But like everyone else has said, for $1600 you can buy anything from one of the 3 B's and be much better off.

What is sad, is that I put my hands on a 105CTi at the gun shop the other day. The gun shoulders and handles well, It looks good, but unfortunately has more problems than its worth. Its how I felt about my 1187 supermag. The gun felt good but was a piece of crap.

Maybe remington will turn the page with this one, but since they're even having QC issues with their tried and true 870, I doubt it.

It will be interesting to see how this gun does. Remington has fallen so far behind the B boys in terms of autoloaders over the last 10 years, it has to do something drastic to try to catch. And with its sticker price, it will fall even further behind the B guns, based on the economy as a whole. I don't know anyone who will pay $1600 for a first year run of an auto, let alone that price from a company with known quality control issues.

Found some more information about the new Remington Versamax. Supposed to be a gas operated gun from what I read. Here are a couple of notable quotes from a Remington rep.

"Simple, and very different in the way it works. Forget what you know about gas or recoil-operated guns. More coming soon..."

"Recoil-- that's a good topic. There isn't an auto-loader 12ga on the market that shoots softer, and we have lab tests to prove it. We'll share next week. "

Typical gun manufacture claims though nothing new and exciting (in my opinion)

Found two videos of it that leaked out earlier.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TirOTioYtAM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJRPH3wzsb4

These two videos sparked my interest. It says they have done 250,000 rounds of testing, I am wondering if they mean without cleaning the shotgun? That would be amazing, to have a gas-operated shotgun that has cycled 250,000 rounds without be cleaned. But I highly doubt it...

I couple of things I noticed as far as design goes. The trigger guard is a bit larger for gloved fingers. The shotgun safety button design is different, it appears to have a larger surface area. It appears they have some sort of "Dura-Touch" surface where you grip the shotgun on the Stock and forearm. Also they have put a small hi viz sight instead of a steel bead on the end of the barrel. The shotgun has a vent rib design that does not level out where it meets the receiver, it looks very much like the benelli vent rib where it raises up. It also appears that Remington may have finally added shims to their shotguns. In addition it looks like the have designed a very slim forearm, and have included sling mounts standard on the shotgun. My guess is that it will probably fall under 7 pounds. Looking at the video it hard to judge the recoil, but it my opinion it looks like just any other gas autoloader. Just have to wait and see. They will be releasing all the details on Monday along with who their new exhibition shooter that will be endorsing the gun (I am guessing Patrick Flanigan)

Agreed on all points! The bolt body looks VERY similar to the Beretta Extrema's...actually all features look exactly like the Beretta plus they added Benelli's stepped rib. Interesting

Looks like they (Remington) one-upped Beretta (Xplor) with the same features+ and counted coup on the price point (~$200 less) plus it's made in the USA.

It will likely spell the beginning of the end for the SBE II & other inertia shotguns as more and more shooters get weary of the felt recoil issues.

Reckon there'll be SBE's by the carload at gun shows in the very near future?

Maybe they did a better job at copying than the 887.

And this guy is a Forum Moderator. Guess you can say whatever you want with that title. Common Daffy.

I think Remington is way out of line with their asking price, given the recent history of their autoloaders. I can say I won't be getting one of these.
