Uses for Shotguns

Postby firewood » Thu May 04, 2006 12:28 pm

I just got these guns from a friend what are the different uses

Mossberg 495b
Mossberg 395kb
Marlin 55g
Ithaca (SKB) XL300

They are all 12ga's but I was told that the Ithaca was used with 3in Slugs for deer hunting and then when I called the company to get an owners manual for it they said it was a water fowl gun. So what happens if you shoot slugs out of this gun would it ruin the barrel? Are any of these guns good guns for deer or are they all bird guns? Thanks

Will it ruin a barrel or gun made for duck or goose if you shoot a slug out of it?

Depends on the age and condition of the gun. assuming all are in good working order no, running a smooth bore slug through a bird barrel will not harm it. If it is a fixed full choke gun I would advise against it. Slugs are generally shot out of an IC choke.

Sounds like you need to take your guns to the gun dealer and have them sort out the info for you. They can give you the best information considerign they can actually get a hold of the gun and look at it. Be your best bet. A good dealer will no charge you anything just for having a look at the guns.

Many family members have killed deer out of a bird barrle on an Ithaca. They shot slugs very well. Just as a note for you. I would think a stop at the gun shop would get you the answers.
Have you ever woke up one day and said. Damn when does the season start.

heres a quick tip...... take a dime (the coin) thats in good shape and see if it fits thru the choke. if it does, shoot all the slugs u want, but if it doesnt, its a full or tighter choke, and i wouldnt shoot slugs or steel shot thru it.
