Anyone have any experience with a wood stocks one or any problems with the wood? Ive seen them around the internet but never in a local shop for sale. Only max4 and black.
As far as using in the field I have some experience but not with ducks. I used an 11-87 wood stocked gun and shot a turkey with it and it never saw me. If I understand your post correctly, I think that should help your question.
I think it's just that most SBEII's are bought for a purpose whether it be waterfowling or in the turkey woods wear you need camo or synthetic because they get torn up. I doubt there's anything with cracking though. Could be wrong though.
I use my SBE with the wallnut stocks for my everyday shooter. Love that gun. I did crack the grip on the shotgun, I fell on it getting out of a boat. I think it would have been worse, had it been a synthetic.
But getting to your point, I don't know why we don't see as many SBE II in wood out there. I've handled them in stores, seem like fine pieces. Couple months ago, I won a SBE II in a raffle. I tried to get the owner of the club that hosted the dinner, to trade in the synthetic for a wood stocked gun. He said he'd do it for another $300. I passed and have one in synthetic...
When comparing prices, they are the same. I have no idea why, he wanted another $300. I'd think the guys like you and me, that think a shotgun has stocks made of wood, are out there, and would buy a SBE II.
The reason you see so many shotguns with synthetic stocks is that they are tougher and less expensive. I've managed to break two different wooden stocks but haven't broke a synthetic one yet.
Thanks for the replies folks. My consensus is much of the same.
I suppose Guys must have taken better care of their equipment years ago. Its a wonder how they did it all those years until synthetics came around. Wink.
Call me old fashion I guess . Although Ive shot a synthetic benelli that was given to me as a gift for quite a few years, I still prefer a nice walnut stocks with checkering.

I was also wondering this the other day because I was thinking of going back to wood. Do your wood guns get banged up more when you are out in the field? Interestingly enough they are cheaper in wood than they are in synthetic on the website... Does the wood on the SBE2 feel good or is it that almost synthetic-y feeling wood you sometimes find on newer guns. I would really like to get back to gripping grains instead of plastic. I miss using my old model 12 when dove hunting.

I abuse mine, and it kinda shows. I clean the gun once a year, oil it maybe twice. Put it in a case wet and forgot about is for a week. Pulled it out, covered in surface rust. Cleaned it up, just a little less of the black on it. With all of that abuse and miss treatment, the finish is still in great shape.
