Not to worry, you can put your own scratches, dings, and dents in a used gun just as easily as in a new one.

Mudpack's advice that ajmorell's advice is the best so far, IS the best so far.

A classic A5 mag, jap made with invector chokes...probably closer to $700 than $500. Only shoots 3" shells, but I havent found that to be a problem.

Bought an 11-87 yesterday. Put about 300 shells through it between yesterday and today with no hiccups. Best part is i only paid $400 for it.
My point is, there are used gun deals to be had.

A used Browning A5 Magnum would be my top choice.

Other used would be a used (at least 90s or older) 11-87 or Browning Gold/Silver or a beretta 3901.

New, it would be a pump. Probably a BPS,

I would personally choose a top quality pump over a budget minded auto. BPS or Nova/Super Nova.

You can just about get 2 887 on sale. Mine are great problems are all worked out on the current model. Clean thoroughly, lube with CLP , fully cycle them, excellent hunting guns. They aren't too heavy, recoil pad is good for 3 1/2 loads. Not works of art or a family heirloom- but they are the best value for a HUNTING gun.

I have experience in the basis of that rumor and have found it to be true by personal experience.

I luv Remington shotguns, but they are not what they used to be.

The only shotguns produced by Remington that needs a little work is the roughed up Express 870. Other than that I think Remingon is still producing some awesome guns. Hell, I just got an 1100 in Feb and its awesome!

If I was looking a duck hunting gun in the $500-700 range, I'd save a few more dollars and get a new Versamax in the sportsman trim. Got mine on sale for $855 out the door. I've shot 1100s 870s and 1187s all my life and the VM lives up to the hype in my opinion. Mine has been flawless thus far and shoots like a dream, everything from 1oz to 2 1/4oz loads. By far the softest shooting auto I've used, makes 3.5in shells tolerable for geese again! If I absolutely had to stay in the $500-700 range I'd keep my eye out for a used 1100 or 1187/1100Mag if you need the 3".

Ithaca Model 37 pump. The new ones start at the top of your range, the used ones are very reasonable. They are a quality AMERICAN MADE shotgun.
Life is to short to hunt with a ugly gun.

I shoot a m3500 currently. Two of the people I hunt with also shoot Stoegers, but one shoots a 2000 and the other a 3000. I hear a lot of horror stories about them, but none of the three of us have had any problems. I shoot x-pert 1550 2's in a 3'' and it works awesome. You can also put aftermarket chokes like the hevi-shot waterfowl or kicks on them and they seem to work well. If you can save up some of the higher end shotguns can be bought used for a little more. A used benelli or Beretta could be a sweet deal. I guess bottom line if you want a semi-auto i'd go stoeger. If you like to pump you can never go wrong with an 870. Just stay away from the 870 super mag 3.5's. I have had tons of problems with my old one and everyone i know that has owned one (3 people) have also had problems with shell ejection.

wow. This subject has been beat to death. Don't think it's really necessary to own a shotgun that shoots 3.5" shells.
Don't think they shoot further or kill any better. Kill a lotta ducks and geese with 2.75" and 3" shells.
It's your choice but really, 3.5" shells are a sales gimmick to get people to part with their hard-earned dollars.

Get a used semi-auto shotgun that starts with B that fits you.
Make sure it fits you well.
Practice practice practice
Kill many ducks and geese.

Beretta 390 or another variant gets my vote. Saw a silver mallard in a pawn shop last week for 600

This^^^

Arguably, the absolute best gasser S/A (Beretta 390) ever made. Mine will far outlast my tenure on this marsh.

The only thing I don't like about the 390 is that it has lots of parts and taking the bolt out in the field would be a Pain. That being said, mine has been flawless so I shouldn't create a problem where one Probably doesn't exist

I just sold my SBEII to a guy because he wanted it a LOT more than I did. I didn't even want to sell it, so I priced it higher than what I could get a new one for. Well he wanted it bad. So I went and picked up a Benelli M2 for $680 in black synthetic and I freaking love this gun! Feels better to me than my SBEII I had and it helped me save enough money to buy that old Auto-5 that I've always been wanting. So I replaced my SBEII with a new M2 and a '58 Browning Light Twelve Auto 5. Gotta love someone thats just itching to buy a gun

If you are really planning to shoot many 3 1/2" bullets I would strongly recommend a gas auto of 7.5 pounds or more. A lightly used SX 2 would be my first choice. You can get a like New gun for $600 or less. It will last a lifetime with a little care.
