Best waterfowl loads for the A400 Extreme

Postby Fowlmouth Hustle » Sat Mar 30, 2013 6:12 pm

This is for all you A400 enthusiasts. What loads have you guys had the most overall success with for waterfowl. And what have you found patterns the best? What are your preferences? Thanks in advance for the input.

I did very well with Kent Silver Steel 3" #2 with a Trulock Lite Mod. Patterns at 40 were very evenly distributed.
I tried Remington sportmans were the percentage was just as good but pattern was not as even as the Kents

buy some and try it out.. every gun is a little different.

my 870 really loves Hevi-metal, my Maxus is more partial to drylok and Kent fasteel.

Yeah I'm gonna try out the Kent's. Problem is, I've gotta drive all the way down to Cabelas to get it. None of my local sporting goods stores carry it. I did pretty good with the Rem sportsmans and the $$$Hevi Shot this past season. The sportsman loads actually patterned better than the Hevi. I was pretty surprised.

Heavyshot 3" 1 1/4 #4 for ducks BB for Geese. Best season in years for me with those.

Yeah I went with the same load and it didn't disappoint.

Try Hevi metal that will cut your price quite a bit.

If your gun is shooting well with Sportsman loads it will love Nitro Steel, "Quality" 1 1/4oz 3" loads @1450fps are Very hard to beat. They are a good balance of shot weight and velocity will not over stress your gun over years of use and will kill birds as far as you should be shooting at them.
Only the patterning board will tell you the load your gun likes the best, but you will be money ahead to start with the load mentioned above from Rem., Fed. or Winchester.

I used to use hevi shot 6 and 4s, but they have been very unreliable lately so I am also looking for a new shell, however Federal water fowl 3" #3s do rely well with a Kicks IC tube and they are under $200. Fed Tungsten Iron is the best, for me, but very expensive so those are for special outings, and Rem Wingmaster HD is also excellent, but they quit making that so it is hard to find. This I do know. In my gun, black cloud is junk, blindside is worthless, and Kent, well I just never did well with Kent.... I may try a bow this year.
