Should I get a 870 for various game?

Postby DoscherHill » Thu Apr 04, 2013 10:02 am

Hey guys I am really looking into 870's in 12 gauge for waterfowl and upland game and wondering if I should buy it. I currently shoot a model 50 20 gauge and want a gun that has at least a 3" chamber to hunt ducks because my model 50 can't take chokes and only shoots 2 3/4" shells. This is very annoying because it is not versatile for anything other than small birds. Please help.

Why not get an 870, they always go bang and are easy to service, but only if it feels right when you shoulder it and shoot it. Mine have been with me since 1975 with no problems other than they can dislike some brands of ammo.

The 870 is one of best shotguns ever made. Buy it and put a set of Carlsons extended chokes on it and I bet you will be most happy with it. I bought one in the early 60's. It has a 24" IC and 26" Mod. We still use it occasionally. Jon

I will agree with the above posts as well. Simple and will last forever with simple maintenance. Huge selection of used barrel choices as well. Mine is my "go to" gun and is a 2-3/4" gun as well. I shoot skeet with it weekly. Excellent on ducks / geese with either my LM or IC barrel. If tubes don't matter, buying one of the older ones would be a good option. Probably in the $450 range and extra barrels are about $150. Good shooting....mauser

Get a wingmaster over an express. I found mine used for less than 300 . All I had to do was buy done new chokes and I was in business. I'm thinking now about finding s matching 20 gauge to hunt with as well.

You can never go wrong with an 870. They have been making em since 1950.

As there's only been ~10 million of 'em made, perhaps you should wait for the beta test results.

Awesome guns. With removable chokes they are the best all around pump IMO. I hear Remington is upping the quality of their Express 870s so you could give one of those a try. But I personally would obviously prefer a Wingmaster because of the better quality.

I started with one. And have three now. All three are wingmasters. One with a 26" fixed IC, one remchoke and one with a 30" full that has been opened to modified. Also have a hastings wadlock barrel and factory fixed full choke.

I also hunt with autos. I have s few M1 Benellis and a couple 11-87's.

If I had ONE choice it would be an 870.

I've had mine for over 6 years, since I was about 16 and still have it. It is by far a reliable gun and I have put mine to the test, sunk it in mud, used as a paddle etc. I love it, kicks like a mule, but it has been a great gun for what it is. I retired it this year and now getting a semi auto. Get one you won't regret it

i am not saying a 870 is a bad gun i own two of them but i bought one around 10 years ago and one two years ago and the newer ones dont seem to have the same quality as the older ones mine jams up so i bought the benelli nova and havent touched the 870 since if its not too late i would suggest a nova or buy a used older 870
