sx3 and light loads

Postby jarod1076 » Mon Apr 08, 2013 4:16 pm

After handling a lot of guns I have settled on the sx3. I want the black shadow in a 28" barrel 3" version. I'm having a hard time finding a 3" at a reasonable price. Around here its a $25 difference between the 3 and 3.5 and tack on another 50 for a special order for the 3 version. I asked the guy at gander how well the 3.5 version cycles light trap loads he told me I would have to buy a different gas piston add another 50 min for a piston.

For those of you with the 3.5 version and shoot trap how well do these guns cycle light loads with out changing out the pistons?

My dad has hundreds of the cheap fedral dove loads through his with stock pistons no failures. Ejects them 20 ft out the side. I hate hunting on his right side. Lol

I've shot a bit of skeet with my 3.5 inch gun with loads that would be considered very light by trap shooters. I have never had an issue and my gun is factory stock.

I have shot a ton of 1 1/8 oz trap loads and never had a failure to eject, spits them a good long ways out of my 3.5 inch SX3.

Thanks for the good news. I have no use or desire to shoot 3.5 but for the price and availability I'll have to go down the 3.5 road.

He's trying to make a quick sale. I have shot 500+ trap shells with my 3.5" SX3. Had maybe 5 jams. Not perfect but certainly not worth another $50...

I just bought an sx3 3.5'' a month or so ago. I've been shooting 1 1/8oz 2 3/4's primarily since I bought it. It hasn't failed me once. I gave it an initial cleaning when I got it out of the box and havn't touched it since. Probably put 10-12 boxes through it.

What does the OP mean by light load? I think they recommend 1 1/8 oz for the 3.5 inch but I know guys who have shot 1 oz out of the SX3 3.5 inch without any problems. The SX3 has such low recoil, I shoot 1 1/8 oz and could shoot them all day. I recently bought a 5 stand gun, a sporting Beretta Silver Pigeon 32 inch barrel and it kicks much more then my lighter SX3, that gas operated auto really reduces recoil.

I shoot a 3.5 Sx3. The only shells I've had issues with are the cheap Winchester trap loads from Walmart. Like any gas operated firearm keep it clean & you won't have issues. I wouldn't hesitate in buying a 3.5'' sx3

IF you don't run heavy 3" or 3.5" shells through the gun, it'll run 7/8 oz shells right out of the box. Those gas pistons will slop out to accommodate heavy loads, but once there, they don't come back. A gas piston will run you $65.

I run 1 oz dove loads through my go-to silver all the time that silver is my primary duck gun.
Smell that? Smells like sumthin died in here.

Here is my back story. I'm right handed left eye dominate. I shoot an 11-87 that is on it's last leg, it's been a great gun but is a pia to clean after a hard day hunting. So in my search for a new gun I was looking at the M2 left handed. Most of the guys I hunt with have sbe II's I feel the M2 fits me better than the sbe II. One guys of our group is left handed he up graded to a left handed sbe II. I had the chance to try it out for a day. While the gun ejects on the left side a big turn off for me was the mag cut off and bolt release were still on the right side. So I made up my mind I'll save a few bucks and stick with a right ejecting gun and make sure it has shims so I can shim the stock cast on.

I shoot trap so I want a gun that cycles light trap loads and one I can take out in the marsh. I also want a gun with the safety in the back of the trigger guard.

These are the guns that are out
SBE II
Any Beretta auto's (safety is in front of the guard)
BPS (too long)
Browning Silver (shot a few of them wanted to like them but didn't feel right shooting them)

I really like the M2 it's my first choice
SX3 feels just as good as the M2 and I'd be saving some money, but I'm getting irritated that a 3" model is going to cost me more than the 3.5 model.
New A-5 feels good but not as good as the M2 or SX3.
I would consider an Ithica 37 but there are not any dealers around here to check them out.
I just became informed about the Affinity but have yet to fondle one
