1187 and a 30 inch barrel????

Postby 870 » Tue Apr 23, 2013 5:20 pm

Hey guys. After my father in laws death I was given his 1187. I noticed it had a 30-inch barrel, what's the difference besides the 2-inch’s, is that to hold the shot closer together, what’s the point? All I’ve ever shot through has been 28 inch barrels. I have heard the o’l timers speak of 30-inch guns as their goose guns. Thanks for any help

Well , I'm an Old Timer so , I can tell you what advantage you have in the 30" barrel !
First , you have 2" more barrel and that will give you 2" more site-ing plane looking down it .
Second , you will gain 14 fps in the loads you shoot .
Third , you didn't say what choke it had so , I'll guess it's a full choke ?

Other than that it is a little heavier ( maybe 3 oz's ) so , your follow-through on the shot should be better .

Now , you know what you have so , go shoot it and be happy it was free !

LOL Thanks for your input.
It came with an IC choke and by my name I'm sure you would guess I"ll have other chokes that would fit it. I replaced it with a mod choke. I'm looking to keep the mod choke in for Snows next spring what do you think?

lengthBoth my 1187 12's sport 30" remchoke barrels. Not the most common length. But I'm not very normal either.

LOL well that makes two of us... So what do you think, 30" sporting a mod choke or full for Snows?
As of right now all I can exspect is a better swing and faster fpc thats all the difference?

I'm a mod or IC for ducks guy myself. Don't shoot over 40 much though.

What I’m looking for is, will the 30” with a Mod choke give me a better pattern at 30 40 yards over a 28” with a Mod choke?

I'm glad you understood my statement , Not trying to be negative about longer barrels because , I prefer them !
Longer barrels have very little advantage over shorter barrels , we aren't talking rifles here so , shoot what you like .
With the ability to change chokes in your gun ( Mine are fixed ) , pattern yours and see what's best for you . You
mite find that , with your choice of shot size , what you have in the gun is just right .

Thank you 3200 I'm going to take your advice.
Since it hasn’t been shot in a few years and for what I’m going to put it through, I’m thinking of taking it a gunsmith for a complete going over to check it out. I have three difference chokes IC Mod and Full

Now comes the fun at cussing at myself for trying to pump an auto every time I shoot until I get my brain wrapped around it’s an auto not a pump.

Thanks again guys for your help

I have two guns with a 30" barrel, one is a Cynergy and the other is an old 870 Wingmater. My third firearm is an SX3 with a 26" barrel. When I shoot with the longer barrels I notice myself swinging the gun and not stopping after I take the shot. That being said, I shoot all of them about the same because my scores on the sporting clay course are roughly the same with the three firearms. The extra four inches can be cumbersome at times.

A 30" barrel will give you longer range than a 28" barrel.
Exactly 2" longer range.

Other than that, there is no practical advantage with a 30" barrel.

I've got a 30" bbl on my Beretta 391. Had a 26" on it originally, but I was kinda Herky-jerky with it, put the 30" bbl on it, and it smoothed out my swing significantly. Use it for shooting clays mostly, as it's ported and too loud for the blind.
