A303 and waterfowl loads

Postby kudu61 » Mon Jun 17, 2013 7:47 am

Just acquired an unused (I mean pristine) A303, 30" full barrel, 3" chamber. I'm an avid crow and pigeon(live) shooter to help local farmers, but I'd like to give ducks and geese a try as there are lots of waterfowl around our area nowdays. Will waterfowl loads, steel or whatever, damage this barrel or should I look for a B80 barrel and ideas on choke would help. thanks

It is very hard to tell with a 303. Some folks (like myself) have had the gas ports opened up to shoot lighter target loads. the gun isn't 'self-regulating'.

These are the best autos ever made in some people's opinion. You are probably ok but again - it is very difficult to tell.

Thanks for the reply. I guess what I'm asking is is this gun "steel rated". I see that term used when in reguard to using waterfowl ammo. This gun handles my lightest pigeon loads handily, cycles fine and ran easily with some of my son's turkey shells.I was actually suprised to find it ran so well with those light 1oz loads. Turkey loads didn't recoil too much either. thanks

I still have a 302 28 inch mag with the drop in mobil chokes i got it in 1984 and used it with lead then steel had no problems so far. I gave up using this shotgun when i purchased a SBE some times i think i should go back to it.

My A303 has choke tubes and has had many rounds of steel through it. However,my concern would would be the fixed full choke. I would be hesitant to shoot steel shot through it. A spare barrel with mod choke or Mobil chokes would be best IMO.

I don't believe your gun is technically proofed for steel loads but from a practical standpoint it doesn't matter because steel pressures are within the same range as heavy lead loads.

the 303 you have is a trap shooting gun. non-toxic loads have higher pressures unless you keep the velocity around 1300 fps to 1350fps. you would be alright to shoot kent tungsten matrix or the hevi-shot made for older guns with the full choke. the 303s were made when steel shot was introduced. harder pellets could score the barrel. good luck trying to find another barrel.
