Soon as the weather gets crappy and the hunting pressure increases I'll switch to my Versamax and some 3" Hevi-Metal 2s also choked Mod. Have a Pattern Master for the VM a buddy gave me but have yet to try it... It's a Ported Long Range. Anyone here use em? Is it worth wasting the shells and an afternoon at the pattern board? Just kinda skeptical..

I think the best choke they ever put out was the original, that one performed as advertised for me. However, I think a lot of that was due to the lack of all the high velocity loads back then. Most people who pattern PM chokes have shown they work very well with the more normal velocity loads 1200-1300 fps, and as you increase towards their 1550fps "limit" on the choke the patterns get less desirable. With nitro steel especially that choke would deliver a pretty dense, short shot string pattern and pretty long ranges.

I've since retired that gun/choke from waterfowling and shoot O/U's now. I have tried the PM extended range, do own the code black (haven't tried it yet), and it performs well, but IMO it's performance is no better/worse than a lot of the other chokes out there that don't cost as much. I really like it more for upland hunting than waterfowling currently. It did great the first half of duck season last year, then I switched it out for comparison, and didn't really see much difference.

Thanks CC. Went out and gave it a try the other day....definitely a passing choke. But produced some pretty dense patterns @ 35-45 yds with some generic 2s and 3s. May give it a try this season if the situation arises.

Try it on some high flying doves, you should be able to still pillow case em at 50+ yards. I just prefer tight chokes in general, since you can always let em get further away if you have to, or just shoot em in the face at the closer ranges. When I use the PM it's actually my first shot with an even tighter choke on top. Most of my shots are probably under 30 yards, though, and the vast majority of my kills are head/neck hits, just how I prefer to do it.

The problem is its my wife's  I asked her if I could barrow it for the season and she told me no and I had to use this for all my hunting this year since I blew all my money on it

So Mark if that offer still stands, I would love to barrow that 410

I'll hunt with at least 4 guns maybe 6 or more . A 28 gauge 48AL, an A-5 Light and Mag 20, at least one Sweet-16 and I might even use the Light and Mag 12. And if I get busy on the loading bench I might even take out the Model-42.

I typically hunt over decoys and shots are generally at or under 30 yards. Here's my set-up:

20 gauge - Early season, mostly teal
Benelli M2, Trulock extended LM choke, PMC High Velocity 3" shell with 1 oz #3 or #4 @ 1450 fps

12 gauge - Late season, mostly mallards, spoonies, gadwalls and some teal
Benelli Cordoba, Carlson extended IC choke, Federal Speed Shock 2 3/4" shell with 1 1/8 oz #3 @ 1375 fps
Benelli - Cordoba (20 ga. & 12 ga.)
Browning - 725 Sporting (12 ga.), Maxus (Hunter & MAX-4 Stalker)

Sold my 20ga Nova, swapped it out with a 20ga SX3 so I could put spacers on it to fit it correctly.
For doves- factory mod choke, Fiocchi 2 3/4" 3/4oz steel #7 1470FPS.
For teal- Carlson extended SK, Fiocchi 2 3/4" 3/4oz steel #4 1470FPS.
For medium and big ducks- factory mod choke, Winchester Drylok 3" 1oz #2.

Dove and big duck combo is good out to about 40yds, maybe 45, and teal load will be good a little past 30yds. Early teal season shots are always inside of 30 yards, so I went ahead and bought a Carlson SK. All 3 combos pattern pretty dang good, posted pics/percentages in the shotshell/reloading forum.

I will be hunting with my Hk SBE with .700 Terror and shooting my HG reload which is 1 1/8oz of #2s. I will also slip in some use with my mod.92 Weatherby pump using the same load and a Hastings extended full choke.

On the advice of a forum member I picked up a Beretta 390 and Carlsons extended waterfowl chokes. I'll be shooting Federal 3" Speed Shok #2. I enjoyed shooting the 390 so much this summer I picked up a second one as a backup. Then, as luck would have it I found a 390 Silver Mallard in a 20 gauge in excellent shape. That one is in the back of the safe waiting for my son to get a little older.

1oz of 4s in 20ga for everything except big water publice hunting. 1.25 oz of 3s for big water public hunting.

A5s for pretty much all hunting. (The rear one, not the new pretender.)

I double and triple a significantly higher percentage of the time when shooting my 20ga. That's just the way it is.

I hunt with a friend in Maryland that guides for extry spending money, all he ever shoots is a 20ga Red Label. I have seen him roll Canadas with it. He made me a believer. I have shot ducks with a 20, my daughter learned with a 20, but now I know you can take geese with a 20. I think it is like golf, you can't buy a better golf came with clubs. a man can spend 2k on a shotgun and $4 a shell, and the man next to you will kill just as many ducks as you do with a 20ga.

And all the talk on the other threads about the best tubes, and the best shells, best gun,..... just because you like it doesn't mean it is the best. Watch out for the man with a rusty 20ga in the blind, he just might out shoot you.

For the 2nd season in a row I'm using my Super Vinci with Mod choke and hevi metal 3" #3 for ducks. 3 1/2" #2 hevi metal for geese with Carlson's Black Cloud chokes in mid and long range. First time using hevi metal loads. So how well have they worked for any of you guys that might be using hevi metal? Been shooting Black Clouds the past few years.

I used to use Hevi-Shot only, but after several duds last year, including leaving the wad in the barrel, I switched. I did send my unused shells back to Environmetal, about six boxes, and they sent me a case of Hevi-Metal, which is not what I bought. So good luck, hope you have better results than I did. When they do go bang, they are deadly.

For the first 2 days... When there actually might be wood ducks he, I will use my 20ga SKB 500 w/ 3" 3s. Then for puddle ducks, I still use my first gun, an 870 Wingmaster 2 3/4 with Kent #3s. For Eider, I will use a Vinci w Kent BBs. Maybe even Ts.

I agree with the posters about 20ga. Shotguns being deadly in the right hands. I use a 12ga. Because my hands are not the right ones.
