Just wondering what everyone uses for coastal hunting setups. Just talked to my father and brother this week and we are thinking of heading out to on the eastern shore for some eider and old squaws. This is brand new to me and I was wondering if you need heavy stuff....3.5 12ga or even 10 ga to play the game. I own about 15 shotguns and don't have a 3.5 12ga yet b/c of my 10ga browning being the canon in the safe. Thinking of buying a new sbe or extrema and don't want to unless I think I need it for a hunt like this. So......what do you sea duck hunters use for a gun/load? Thanks
well, go with a remington 870 express supermagnum, you cant go wrong with that gun, i dont hunt sea ducks, but id say a full choke, with maybe some winchester xpert high velocity 3 inch #2's they have 1400 fps, and 1 1/4 oz of shot
I have shot everything from surf scoters to Cans and buffies in the sound and thought I needed the payload of the 3 1/2 but then spent a few hours on the range shooting 5 stand and skeet and that seemed to help more. The Sea Ducks are not as spooky as their puddle duck friends. We have had scoters fly in to the dekes even with us shooting. They ARE a bit bigger and seem to have a kevlar vest on. The FPS in the load is what you need to watch! We have shot scoters with 3 1/2 inch BB and they drop and just keep diving. When we switched to the Kent Fast steel or anything in the 1500+ range they drop like a ton of bricks
There is no problem that cannot be solved with the proper application of HIGH EXPLOSIVES!
I spend 40+ days a year hunting the eastern shore and enjoy eider and can hunting. The area is FULL of scoters too. My load of choice is anybody's steel load with at least 1500fps in BB or T shot. You don't really need 3 1/2" loads to take em but it helps. 3" is just fine.
