28 Gauge for Ducks

Postby RedPup » Mon Dec 30, 2013 1:54 pm

Was wondering if any of you use a 28 gauge for close in duck hunting, and what choke(s) seem to work best?

I carry a 28 gauge Citori for quail and woodcock, and sometimes jump wood ducks or mallards off of the marsh. I found a couple of boxes of Bismuth #5 at a local gun show, and was thinking of trying it.

Thanks,

As tight a choke as possible. If you are centering on the head they work great to about 20-25 yards. If you can solidly shoot the skeet range with a mod or full you will do fine. Before steel, some of my best shoots were with a 28 Full and 7/8 oz. #5 @ 1370 fps. I felt confident to 25 yards but that's where I had to end it. Honkers fall just as dead as well. Good luck....mauser

#5 bismuth would be fine for close work. I load up #6 ITX for ducks and #7 HW18 when I expect a mix of ducks/geese. I have a Remington 870 with the factory fixed modified choke. The key is to pick and choose your shots carefully. Just two weeks ago, my son got his hunter's license and this is his gun for the next few years.

Thanks guys:

I found a box of Hevi-Shot #6 as well. Think I will give it a try over a small decoy spread.

Glad I asked. I had Skeet and Full chokes in. I switched out to Mod and Full.

That heavy shot should be good out to 30-35 yard's out of your 28ga.

If I could ever find a shooter 28 ga model 12 (prewar), I'd sure use it a few times a year!
