New 3 1/2 inch Auto Poll

Postby clymerfowler » Fri Jan 03, 2014 7:37 pm

i'm in search of a new auto. i want 3 1/2 capabilities even though i shoot almost strictly 3 inch #1s. i dont want to be in that situation where you run out of shells and all your partner has is 3 1/2s and your guns a 3 inch. this gun will be used for everything from layout boats, late season corn fields, and early season woodies. take your pick. I llike the looks of the Beretta A400 and Benelli SBEII but have heard about the recoil in the SBE not being friendly with heavy loads.

2 of my buddies have Berettas and use them and they work flawlessly. I may have voted for Beretta but did you ever think of the Franchi Intensity just throwing that out there.

I have the sbe2 and am liking it I shoot mostly 2 3/4 1oz Feds blue box. It's been good to me no problems with it.

I shoot an SBE2. I really like it and would have no reservations about recommending one, but I cast my vote for the Browning Silver just because I own one of them too and I think its such a good gun for the price they sell at. The camo on my Browning is way better than the camo on my Benelli. Only thing about the Silver is to be aware that at one point it is very possible that you will have to replace the gas piston spring.

I too opted for the listed gun that I shoot... Silver. Couple other excellent options left off the list  ...SX3, VersaMax, 935

Hope to hear a report from PC76 on that new A5.

If your biggest worry is running out of shells, the solution is far more simple than buying a new gun so you can borrow shells from a buddy.....

Here are some possibilities:

1. Take an extra five shells in your pocket. If you can't get a limit of ducks/geese with 30 shells, perhaps you should....

2. Practice shooting more. Skeet, 5-stand, and sporting clays will help you stay sharp and not have to shoot 8 times to knock down one duck.

3. Have your buddy buy a new gun; a 3" gun.

4. Have your buddy with the 3.5" gun bring an extra box of 3" shells to the blind. You can both shoot them if you run out.

5. Adopt the attitude that "if I use up all the shells I brought with me, I've had enough shooting for one day".

All the guns you listed are good guns. You won't go wrong with any one of them. Pick the one you like best.
I didn't vote because, as 23 said, there are other guns that deserve to be in the running.

Versamax. Your shoulder will be happy with your choice. I put a case of 3.5" Kent 1 3/8 oz. BBs through mine this fall with no issues on my rebuilt shoulder.

i left out the 935 because in my opinion they are a pos. had two and got rid of both, the sx3 doesn't feel fight in my hands and i don't like the versa max ether. the berreta, benelli and silver fit me the best but the A5 is a awesome gun.

I did not vote due to the limited listings. My first choice would to buy a used HkSBE. It is my choice for the holy grail of duck guns. I bought my used one for $700 and would do it all over again if necessary.

I love my new A5 mag. Has worked flawlessly with any size loads and to me the recoil is very manageable even with heavy 3 1/2" loads.

I had an original extrema, loved it, performed flawlessly and patterned well with factory tubes, I now have an sbe2 and just prefer the lighter weight and narrow profile of the gun, it handles very well for me!

I have owned both the SBE2 and the A400 Xtreme. The SBE2 would scramble my brain with recoil. It went down the road. I now shoot the A400 Xtreme and I will never buy another Benelli. The A400 is a dream to shoot and I have never had a problem with it!

I didn't vote, but I will tell you that I have had a lot of trouble with my Beretta A400 sent it back to Beretta once to be fixed already and am getting ready to send it out again on Monday. A lot of the people I hunt with in Colorado have already gotten rid of there's because cycling issues with 3 1/2" shells. I'm in the same boat as you are in knowing what to buy wish I could find a Beretta Extrema 2 brand new but am having a hard time I'm leaning towards the Browing Maxus. My .02 Max

i had a browning maxus with a 26 inch barrel and the recoil with 3 1/2s wasnt very nice. tried 3 inch turkey loads and they were close to being to much. My gun will be a all purpose. From Pigeons and doves to geese and turkeys.

I'm a Beretta guy all the way but just can't justify the cash they want for the A-400. With that said I would go for the Silver in a heartbeat, they are dead reliable and will out pattern just about anything out there (with aftermarket chokes). If it were me I would get the Silver, pick up a Carlson Waterfowler choke set. Then a couple of really good calls (like a JJ Lares) and some good decoys and maybe some shells and still be ahead with the price of an A-400 or SBE II. You will come out way ahead on that route, good calls and decoys will put more birds on your strap than any gun ever will.

What it really boils down to, is deciding whether you like gas-operated, or inertia operated.

Of the 3.5" gas-operated guns out there, the FN made SX2/SX3 and Browning Silver/Gold are the only ones that have had enough time afield to mean something, and have proven to be reliable.

Of the 3.5" inertia operated guns out there, the Benelli SBE and SBEII are the only ones that have had enough time afield to mean something, and have proven to be reliable.

The rest, have either proven to fall short, or they are too new and remain unproven at this point.

I can really agree with the above advice on the Xtrema 2 it is a great one. I also have one of these and I alternate it with my A400. I have been shooting my Xtrema 2 for 4 years now and that gun just doesn't stop. I have never had a FTF or FTC with mine as long as I have owned it. I bought mine new. It has a 26" barrel, Max 4 camo and KO. The factory chokes pattern very well. A light recoil gun that handles well and shoots very well. Tough as nails.

I shoot trap with mine with target loads without issue. Cycles fine. The only thing I don't like about the Benelli is the bore diameter. I wish they back bored them.
