10 gauge barrel lentgth

Postby 1steve7301 » Thu Jan 09, 2014 8:57 am

I am thinking about purchasing a Browning Gold light 10 for my late season goose/duck hunting on Great Bay in NH to replace my Vinci 3 1/2. As these guns are not generally available in my area to look over and swing, I am struggling on barrel length. I generally like a 28" barrel in a semi-automatic, but do knot know if a 26" in the much heavier 10 gauge might be the way to go. I would appreciate the thoughts of others who have experience with these guns, thanks.

I have a BG 10ga with a 28in barrel. One of my hunting partners has a 26in BG 10 and I liked the way the 28 felt. As far as weight goes I couldn't tell the difference. If you like a 28, buy the 28.

On my 12 gages I like 27" barrels while my 935 with a 10 gage barrel is 27.5". You really need to mount the guns to see how they fit and if you like the balance. Ned S

My Remington SP10 is 26 inches and have never felt the need for a longer barrel

I've shot my bud's 30" BPS10 and find it toooooo long, too heavy. I have a 26" barrel on my sp10, like it much better.

My BPS 10 gauge had 26" barrel. I sold it after 20 years. I likeed the 26". My SX 2 has a 26" as well. Remember the receivers are long.

Years ago I bought a used 24" barrel for my Gold10 and I love it. In fact the 26" barrel that came with the gun is practically brand new. The gun just feels better balanced with the 24" barrel. I think Browning still offers the 24" barrel on their NWTF "turkey" gun.

Got a 26" on my gold light and love it. I used to shot 28" for a while and have switched to 26" with extended choke tubes and love that length. I've had 30" barrels and just didn't feel as good shooting the longer barrel.

I have a SP-10 with a 26" barrel. It's a comfortable length for me, but sometimes for the sake of my hunting partners, I want to get a 30". The noise apparently is much louder coming from my 10 than from a 26" 12 gauge shooting 3 1/2 shells. I wear hearing protectors so I don't notice it, but I now make sure everybody hunting near me wears ear protectors too. I think a longer barrel would help with the noise.

I have 28 in on my browning lite gold and love it . It points faster than most 10 ga because it's about 3 lbs lighter . I have a extended range pm tube and love the performance of the gun. I shoot Remington nitro steel 13/4 bb out of it and hevi-metal and it gets the job done. I'm actually looking at buying another one so I can have a pair of them.
(IF IT FLIES IT DIES AND IF IT SITS THEIR IT STILL DIES ) Let's go shoot their faces off

I have two Gold 10s. Both have 30" barrels. I like this length but I like the 28" best of all. My very first Gold 10 had a 28". I also have a 24" extra barrel. I also think the 28" barrel looks the most balanced on the gun. The 28" will give you a longer sighting plane.

My bps has a 30 inch barrel, and my golden light has a 28 inch barrel. I love both.
Good Luck in the field-Mike.

I would say from the time in the field they are BOTH good guns. You can't make a bad choice there. The War Wagon crew all like the 26" bbl.'s because we hunt out of Layout blinds, and longer bbl.'s make it a little harder to get it up and go...

I was in the same spot as you and I decided to get the gold light with a 26 inch barrel. I am very happy I made that decision because it has functioned flawlessly. I will probably get an sp-10 eventually because I would like to add on to the collection but as of right now I'm happy with my gold. It is like 1 or 2 pounds lighter than the sp-10. That's just me though both are great guns
Thanks

Myself and 2 buddies went goose hunting this morning, the 2 of us shooting SP10s got a limit each and the buddy shooting the
Beretta A400 XTREME 3.5 shot one goose. He had geese all over him LOL. I think from the chit chat in the truck on the way home, hes now in the market for the mighty 10 . AND whats really funny hes by far the best wing shot out of the 3 of us

Both of the SP10s had 26 inch barrels.
