Advice needed...

Postby no3topqb » Sun Jan 12, 2014 6:53 pm

Here's the deal... my dad is looking at getting a semi auto 12. He's currently shooting a 835. He definitely has no interest in spending a grand cuz he really don't get to hunt that much. I said for him to check out a m3500. He said something about a 935... I heard a lot of good stuff about the stoeger. But not much on the 935. What's yalls opinion???

Your choices say 3.5 inch capable. Is that what you want? Or just any semi auto under a grand?

Because, there have been lots of guns that were awesome in 3", but totally sucked when that extra 1/2" was added.

And, there have been lots of guns that were awesome, but never offered in a 3.5" chamber.

I'm sure he'd be happy with a 3inch gun. He's just tired of the shoulder pounding the 835 dishes out...

If he hates high recoil......3.5 inch shells are out. several autos come to mind

Stoeger m3000

beretta a300 outlander

franchi affinity

franchi I12

beretta a390/3901 ext.

remington 1100 or 11/87

The gas autos are better on recoil than the inertias like the franchi. And most of these could be dampened even more with an aftermarket recoil pad like a limb saver.

Not a fan at all of mossturds. Beretta 390 is good if you can find one. Used sbe, maybe check out an sx3. All much better quality guns.

Btw the berretta 390s might be one of the better budget autos ever made.

I haven't looked at the Mossberg. Why all the neg feedback? Is it craftsmanship, quality or what? my wife's step dad has the m3500 and really likes it. A local gun shop has them for around $650.

They aren't built to last. They literally wear out to the point that they cease to function, and cannot be repaired.

A well built shotgun is just about impossible to wear out.

It will never reach a point that it cannot be economically repaired and thus considered a total loss.
Tens of thousands of rounds fired (more than the average hunter would buy in three lifetimes) is not too many "miles".

That is not the case with at least a few of the models that Mossberg has made.

He never uses the 835 anymore. Always wants me to bring my 3" bps. Which I'm fine with, but he would like an auto. I found a used sx2 for 600, but I can get a new m3500 for not much more...

I'd rather have a beat up used SX2, than a brand new M3500.

The stoegers are not exactly known for quality. The semi mossbergs are a crap shoot.Might want to take a look at some higher quality used guns. My2 cents

Maybe not the o/us or sxss but i havent heard anything poor about the m3500 or m3000 other than poor fit and finish.

Quality lacks. Guns are very unbalanced and often have jamming issues. The ones we had wouldn't cycle reliably.

IMO the best thing your dad can do is look beyond the price tag, and buy a quality proven performer that fits him well. You mentioned he doesn't get to use it often, all the more reason to put the money in and be able to enjoy the times you get out vs cursing at a gun for not performing. Just my .02.

They may last they may not roll the dice. Or you could buy a sure thing.

I have a 935. It is great shooting gun and more reliable then a lot of high priced guns and will out pattern most if not all others with 3.5 inch ammo. The only thing about the 935 is that it is only a 3" or 3.5" gun. I have not run the M3500 yet, I plan on testing one in the next few months. If he is looking for a good shooter for 3" and 3.5" shells then the 935 will fit the bill. I have run more then a few cases of shells through mine the last six years and it has cycled everything I put in it.

Good luck,
