Reversing safety on Browning A-5 or Maxus

Postby Ohioducker » Fri Jan 24, 2014 10:13 pm

Does anyone know if you can have the cross bolt safety reveresed on a newer Browning A-5, Maxus, or even a Silver? Looking at a new gun and I shoot Lefty. I know there are a few that come as lefty models in other brands. I was just curious if it could be done like the Winchester SX3 can?

Looked it up in my Owners Manual,, page 12

The "safety" can be reversed from right- to left-handed by a qualified gunsmith.

Probably could do it yourself if you have the proper punches and some working knowledge of mechanisms. I've never done it,, but very likely some small detent/ball release to hold positioning, so if you try be careful not to lose any tiny parts or you're SOL.

The barrel type safety buttons can be reversed fairly easy in most cases. Its just the matter of turning it around the opposite direction. There are normally only four parts to the assembly. The barrel button, detent ball (ball bearing), spring and dowel pin to hold the spring and ball in place. Just remove the trigger group which is held in place by one or two dowel pins that go through the side of the action. When you have the trigger group out, locate the dowel pin that is near the safety. Remove it and take out the spring and ball. Sometimes the ball will not come out. In that case, just leave it where it is, as it will not interfear with switching the direction of the barrel button (safety). I just switched one out on my new Escort 20ga, piece of cake as I ended up with a left handed gun and could not return it for a RH gun.
