Help me decide

Postby EDP1 » Sun Jan 26, 2014 8:34 am

I am trying to decide between a Mossberg 500 or 835. I don't shoot 3.5in shells now but could be useful for turkey. I have always used 3in for everything ducks, turkey and deer. Which would you choose and why?

The 835. Feel like its a little better quality. What is the price difference?

I don't use 3.5 shells either but it's nice to have the option etc.

You can't wrong with the 835. Total workhorse.

It ain't purdy. It may rattle. Kicks like mule.

But it gets the job done.

The price difference is about 100.00. But the 835 is camo and the 500 is not.

It cost a little over 200 to get a gun camo dipped. So the extra 100 for camo is a bargain. With the camo finish, you will not have to worry about rust if you plan to duck hunt with it. I shoot a SBE that has 3.5" chamber but rarely ever shoot 3.5 shells myself. Just decide on which gun you like the best and forget the price diff. Its what you will be happy with for the long run that is most important. Me, the camo film finish is worth its weight in gold as I think black guns look cheap. BUT, that is my opinion! I own a bunch of black guns, wish they were all camo. Also, you may move into goose hunting and may decide the 3.5 shell is needed later on. On the other hand, you can kill just as many ducks with a black gun as with a camo gun, the camo makes no diff to them and the camo wont make you blend in any better nor is it important in terms of concealment.

Think about the 3.5" kicking like a mad mule now, how would it feel when you are 20 - 30 twenty years older? Probably like two mad mules with an attitude.

Do you really need a 3.5" or you just want one? Go find a buddy who has one and go shoot a box 25 shells out of it then decide.

The 835 is backbored and i do not believe the 500 is, better choke system as well on the 835.

If you do get some 3.5 turkey loads hang on!!!

Just get the 835 if it fits well. Camoed, better gun. Only $100 difference? I think it's a no brainer. Even if you mainly shoot 3".

Depends on fit. I've never been a mossy fan, I've I'm looking at a pump gun it's going to be a camo nova. Easy to break down. Good customer service, and very reliable.

Then again I'm a little biased based on my screen name. Lol
