I know this thread is M3500 vs SBE2 but I will throw in another vote for the Franchi Intensity. Benelli's inertia system is in all 3 companies but talking with many gun shops in the Charlotte NC area they recommended either Franchi or Benelli. As you tier down from Benelli, they are saying the parts get cheaper and as such the warranty is less.

Price breakdown in Max-4:

Stoeger M3500 - $699 - 5 year warranty
Franchi Intensity - $1099 - 7 year warranty
SBE2 - $1699 - 10 year warranty

I have a Nova and never had problems with it but could not spend the coin on a SBE2. I purchased the Intensity in Max-4 from a dealer on Gunbroker for a steal but do not have it yet. Good luck with the hunt

not sure if you have purchased a new gun yet or not but here is my review of the m3500, it has been a complete beast and super reliable. I bought it when they were first released so it has 3 real hard seasons under its belt.

I think you'll be fine with the Stoeger. All brands will have a lemon from time to time. I've heard much more positive about the Stoeger than negative. I'd also consider an sx3 or extrema 2 as well. A little more but also great guns. If you want a 3.5" anyway. Season a ways away yet unless your doing early snow goose. If I were you I would just save up and put aside $1200 or so and then go shopping. Shoulder a bunch of different guns and what feels best go with it. That way you will have enough money to purchase it. Unless your stuck on a sbe then of course you'll need more $$$

Buy a used SX2 for $450, and you'll have $ left over for dekes, handguns, strippers, etc.

While I sincerely hope the M3000/M3500 Stoeger guys get many seasons of service from these shotguns, the M2000 series was plagued with QC issues that often manifested themselves after the third or fourth season and eventually became a parts gun or scrap.

My M3500 is a great gun. The ONLY 2 problems I have with it is the trigger pull is very heavy, and the recoil is pretty bad. But honestly, I paid $630 for a Max4 semiauto that functions properly, throws up great patterns, and handles well. But comparing it to an SBE is like comparing a Mustang to a Lamborguini as far as price and performance.

Like I said, here's hoping for the best as only time (3-4 seasons from now) will tell.

BTW, for that kind of money, you could have bought a used AL390 or new 3901 (Beretta's) and had a shotgun that has a proven track record of going 150,000+ rounds over the span of several decades. That shotgun would likely be passed down to the next generation.

I own a 3500 and a sx3. I've hunted with sbeII and friends/family own a bunch of all 3. I'd say those are probably the top 3 guns in our group. Sx3 and SbeII are "better guns" fit finish and what not. The 3500 HUNTS just as well as all 3. If you have the money get the sbeII, if not, you'll be fine with the 3500.

my 2 cents.
