Youth 20 gauge questions.

Postby cyclonefan » Mon Feb 10, 2014 6:56 am

I am looking to buy my 11 year old son a new semi-auto shotgun in the near future. I don't want to spend a fortune on a gun he will likely out grow in the next year so I have decided on a Weatherby sa-08 or the Escort youth 20 gauge. I am looking for reviews and recommendations. I know there are better guns out there but I am sure he will be upgraded to a nice 12 gauge in the near future. Also what brand of chokes does the Escort use? Thanks

Weatherby, buy the adult stock while you're at it. The gun will last him and long time, and with the adult stock, dad can shoot it too.

Weatherby. They have great customer support if you need it. Horrible customer support from Escort importer. Weatherby uses standard invector chokes. The Escort uses Mobil choke I think. Chris should chime in here, he has a new one in 20ga.

My vote is the sa-08 , I got one for my wife last June and It was flawless its first season. We looked at almost all the available youth semi's on the market and ended up with the sa-08 for a few reasons. My wife is a small thing, coming in at 5'0 107lbs so I wanted a semi auto and preferably gas for recoil reasons. Next the SA 08 was the slimiest of the semi autos she handled which made it easy to handle and control. She could firmly grab the forearm and it has a narrower throat on the pistol grip then most which also helped. another reason was it came in a 24 inch barrel which I prefer over the standard 22 inch youth barrel. The 24 gives a little longer sighting plan and a smoother swing in tracking targets. But the most important reason was after trying all the shotgun we did its the she put to her shoulder and then looked at me and said its the one. She shoots Carlson's choke tubes in it in LM and IM and coupled with 1 oz nitro mags in 4s or blindside 1 1/16th 5s has been very deadly on decoying ducks up to mallard size. The SA 08 also took a total of 17 honkers this year a few being late season MN giants using both Federal 1 oz #1s and hevi shot through a IM .

Based on those two, I'd go with the SA-08

Weatherby does use the invector choke pattern, i'd suggest to look into the Hevi Shot chokes, have had GREAT success out of my guns with them.

i will say this that the weatherby 20 gauge semi sa-08 is by far the most sold 20 gauge in my shop, i have yet to have one come back for look see for problem ect. also i will add that about 1/3 to half of ones that i sold the adults are shootimng them more then the kids and some just got tired of shooting the 12 gauges(mainly that they are getting older lighter gun). so alot of them are getting alot of trap/hunting (lead/steel loads)through them.
