How often you should clean beretta a400 xtreme

Postby WMTribe_Kicker » Tue Mar 11, 2014 7:59 pm

I'm a firm believer in cleaning a gun every time that you use it, but I'm very interested in this self cleaning piston and was wondering how long some of y'all have gone without cleaning this gun. I know gas tends to be dirtier, but am very curious. I have one on the way to my house now, so I'm pretty excited. I'm to meticulous to not clean it every time I use it, but for peace of mind I guess I'd just like to know

I clean my gun's after shooting also. So personally after initial cleaning I ran a case of AA super sports 1 1/8 at 1300 through it at the clay's range. It was not as dirty as 391's I have had for same amount of shells. Have a friend with one who only cleans his at the end of the season. Said he shot roughly 600 rnds of 3 and 3 1/2 inch shells before cleaning. No problems. I am sure it could go much longer. Recommend shooting stiff target loads like the super sports for break in. Other tip, after cleaning gas piston and barrel gas port wipe dry as lube will just collect more residue. Good luck with it.

Great to hear & thank you for your response. Fortunately the a400 I bought comes with a free case of Winchester AA ammo!

Frequency of cleaning depends a lot on the conditions in which the gun is being used. For instance:

My duck gun (gas auto) gets cleaned every 25-30 shots. I've determined, over several seasons, that that's when it starts getting loaded up with powder, cattail seeds, bulrush stems, twigs, cordgrass, mud, etc., and the action starts to slow down.

My pigeon gun (also gas auto, like the A400) will go well over 300 rounds (I've gone as high as 500) and will still be functioning perfectly.

I clean both guns the same way, and use the same lubricants on both. The difference; cleaner shells and cleaner conditions the one gun is used with/in.

If I were you, I'd take advantage of my experience and keep track of the number of shells you put through the gun as you shoot it. Don't clean it until it starts acting up. That way you'll have a good idea of when to clean your gun, based on your conditions.

My son shoots an a400 for everything. When he's shooting clays, we'll break it down about every 1,000 rounds. With hunting, it purely depends on the weather. I don't think that you can shoot enough hunting loads in a fall to mess it up. It's the weather that dictates the cleaning up here. They're a good shotgun but built fairly fragile. have fun....mauser

Mauser, just curious, what's fragile about the a400?

It's a Beretta! Once a year is sufficient!

Once every three or four trips...........Tops! And that would be erring on the side of extreme caution.
I think you could easily go the whole season unless hunting around salt water, and salt water mud.

I'm sure, as with any quality gun, it will run well for a long time dirty. With that said if you want a long life out of the gun take care of it and clean after using it.

When y'all go to unload your beretta a400's and pull the bolt back very quickly, does it tend to "slip" or lose grip on the shells, especially when trying to unload 3.5's? My a400 xplor had this problem, and now I see that my a400 xtreme does the same thing. I shot about 75 1/8 oz #8's saturday and a handful of 3" #2's with the xtreme and had not one single problem though. I was very pleased.
