Best upgrade/modifications to your waterfowling shotgun

Postby mnduckngoose » Wed Mar 12, 2014 3:13 pm

What are some upgrades/modifications/accessories that you cannot live without having on your trusty duck killer? I like to put a nice high-viz front sight on my guns. Please post anything and everything you do to your guns! Could make the difference on a kill or a miss who knows!

The only upgrade I ever made to my duck hunting shotguns is to have them coated with Black-T. I spend a lot less time having to fight rust.

The best upgrade I didnt have to make was getting a black chrome plated barrel on my new gun purchase. I recently bought a new 20ga Escort Supreme and this was one of the highlights of this gun. Fighting barrel rust is a chore. I like the gun so much I intend to buy a 12ga of the same next. I also have Browning, Benelli and Beretta duck guns but right now, I am partial to my new one. As for add ons I have made, I did the most to my HkSBE 12ga. I was fighting rust with it my first season using it so I had it max4 camo dipped. I added a Limbsaver prefit pad, Uncle Mikes nickel sling swivels and 1 1/4" wide Uncle Mikes nylon sling. A green Tru-Glow front sight, Sure Cycle recoil system wtih stainless 25% stronger recoil spring. Most internal parts are either chrome plated, nickel plated, aluminum or stainless. The tail of the barrel (action top) is nickel plated on the inside. The bolt, bolt handle and trigger are chrome plated. The most important add on was a Terror choke tube. I plan to add a bore snake inside the buttstock. I have the tools on my key chain for teardown as falling through the ice and getting my gun soaked is always a possibility.

Installing a magazine plug in my SX3 that I can remove/replace simply by unscrewing the mag cap (I use that gun for many things).
Next best was a LimbSaver and an XCoil....depending on which gun I'm talking about.
Then, the installation of slings.

That pretty much covers all the can't-live-without modifications I've done. There have been others, but of minor consequence.

On my Remington 11-87 SP the following mods were added years ago when it was my only true Waterfowling gun. The mods where done to speed up follow up shots and reloading. At the time I was hunting heavy green timber most of the time.

Magna-ported the barrel (26")
White Bradley front bead
HD front swivel
Dave's Speed Loader (replaces carrier release with SS loading chute)
Over size safety button
Scattergun Technologies solid hi-vis mag follower
Coated mag spring
MOBU Rem synthetic stock

All of the mods remain today and it gives me the fastest follow up shots of any gun I own.

Kind of a duck close combat gun.

I keep it stock. That's how it was designed to operate. I would do a stainless mag spring that is to oem specs tho.

For ME , I got add OFF's ! On my Browning Maxus , I took-off the front bead ( the gun is fitted to me ) so I don't need it
I sealed the piston so there is less blow-by then I cut down the stock to my LOP then I added 8 oz's of weight to the stock as
it has a 30" barrel reducing recoil . With a Black Sling for comfort while carrying into the field ! With this gun having a Carbon
Fiber coating and a 3" chamber and ONLY shooting 2 3/4 " reloads , I don't see much else to do to it But Kill Ducks with the
Briley extended LM and IM chokes !

Best upgrade to my waterfowling gun was selling the SBEII I had and buying an A400.
That one move has been the difference of night and day.

I can fire two or three hundred rounds though it in an afternoon of killing clay, and say "When are you gonna hurt me?"

Interesting. I've shouldered both an A400 and an SBE. The Beretta feels far more natural/organic, than the SBE.

I put an OEM camo stock on my Rem 1100 and shaved off about 6 oz weight changed the action spring and O ring and finally put two 1/4 inch plywood shims and now the gun fits well also reblued the gun is like new now.

With it being proven.......most Waterfowl guns upgrades are already done ?

We asked for camo-finish ........
less recoil......
better sighting plane......
lighter guns....... DONE ! with a cost increase of 3 times
easier fitting guns ( or self adjustments )
tighter patterning guns......
more case capacity.......
Longer forcing cones.......
Then the Government mandated Steel shot So ,
They gave us OVER-BORED barrels which is better for steel shot !

All this and we are trying to match Old Guns capabilities......for killing waterfowl ?

Back-boring, or at least lengthening and polishing the forcing cone.

The a400 is specifically made for recoil sensitive people so I would think there would be a big difference.

My a400 is worth every penny to me. As I have back and neck issues... Just the other day I shot back to back days of 100 rounds of clays and felt nothing....
