Do All?

Postby BurninPowder » Fri May 30, 2014 2:22 am

Thought this would be a good "out of season" topic of discussion... What is your ultimate "do all" shotgun? What shotgun would you trust your life to in a self defense situation but still feel comfortable using in a hunting situation and not be ashamed of showing up at your local gun club with. I know some may agree this quite a tall order of one gun... I personally think it's not as difficult as it seems. Thought this might generate some interesting answers. Gun unmodified, with the exception of changing chokes/barrels. I would not exclude used from this conversation.

I'd have to say that it'd be a shotgun that I'd feel comfortable taking to a 3-gun match.

12 gauge, 3.5" chamber, semi-auto, high capacity mag tube, and a 22"-26" barrel with a Trijicon RMR mounted on a SpeedBead mount.

That'd be a gun that could be counted on to handle turkeys, waterfowl, upland game, spring snows, and bad guys.

I'm a great fan of inertia actions, but they're not worth a hoot for grab and shoot home defense where you might not have time to properly shoulder the gun as necessary for the action to cycle a second round.

My old 870 Wingmaster with 20" smooth bore deer barrel and 28" modified barrel. However, in reality I hardly ever use the gun. It sits in my bedroom closet loaded with buckshot.

My go to would be my 1978 vintage 870 Wingmaster

Winchester SX3 3.5" with 26" Barrrel. Will work for waterfowl, turkey, upland, clays, etc. No gun is perfect for everything, but that one will cover a lot of bases well.

Which would inspire more fear into the hearts/minds of the bad guys, the sound of a round being racked into battery of a pumpgun....or, the Benelli "click" ?

:lol3: I too have experienced the Benelli "click" a few times! Luckily on all occasions it wasn't in my hands. One particular case I'd been hearing crap all morning for bringing my $300 870 to the blind. First group comes in and I hear the infamous "click" followed by various profanities. I'll let you guess which gun out of three was the only one going boom.

I won't rack my house gun for a bad guy. I see no point in tossing a perfectly good shell on the ground. :lol3:

Same dufus that makes his Benelli click is apt to short shuck pump, so the bad guy's got nothing to worry about either way.

The question here is why is your pumpgun not already loaded ready to go?

It is. However, with 7 rounds still in it, I would want the perp to hear that wonderful metallic sound as well as the cartridge hitting and rolling across the floor, to give him time to soil his pants, before I blew him smooth in two.

Or, to keep the trigger spring assembly from taking a set.

Nah, if he is getting ready to come through my door I don't want him to know where I am located and that I am prepared to defend myself.

Similarly, I am not going to turn the lights on or hold a flashlight for that same reason. I know my house better than he does. I can move about silently....he on the other hand is either going to be holding a light and a weapon...or will be running in to stuff either if which making him an easy target.

Yes I have thought about it a bit. Sue me! Lol
