Rem Hypersonic & Nitro Steel 3"Hull-best reload?

Postby Frodo Bags'em » Wed Oct 09, 2013 6:53 pm

Dear Family, Friends & Fellow Noble Sportsmen,

These are some Remington 3" hulls that I have and would like to ask for
some fast steel load published data. I have Alliant's current reloading guide.

I lit up the primer hole and the crimp end to show that these Rem Hulls
(Hypersonic and Nitro Steel) are the same little doggies.

Public confession: I only have Alliant Steel powder and Fed209a primers.
Brother, could you spare a dime?

Thanks for your help and assistance.

Sorry, no loads on hand... but just a FYI, those are typically called "remington 3" yl bw" or yellow basewad. I know there are recipes out there. I myself have been saving some remington hevi-shot loads that are the same hull for future loadings.
Why do I shoot 3.5" for geese? Because they don't make a 4" yet!

I sent BTJustice a request for load data for these hulls and hope to hear something back.
He has them on his 3" hull post.

From the RSI manual....

Load #80

Rem 3" yellow bw hull
Fed 209a
33gr Asteel
RSI wad
+1 1/8" felt under shot for #3s and #4s
546gr steel shot
1475fps
12100psi

I would load this down one grain and use 32gr powder

BP has a load with the MM1230 that is about the same as this. A little different pressure. 1390Fps Is what I get with 32gr

Chris and Baltz....hey guys, thanks a bunch. I have BP's Status of Steel manual, but did not see the 1230MM load. What page is it on?

I was going to use these 3" Rem hulls for #2 shot. Do you think this will work well?

Two further questions:

1) Do you think this load will still need an undershot spacer, using #2 shot?

2) Is 546 grains of steel shot equivalent to a 1 oz or 1 1/8 oz load?

For 1 1/8oz yes. 1 1/4oz no. Might have to adjust pellet count or use over shot card.

546 is 1 1/4. 492 is 1 1/8. 437 is 1oz.

#2s should fit just fine without the felt spacer. Its ok to adjust the pellet count a pellet or two for precise fit making a good crimp. Just dont increase the count.
If this load doesnt do it for you I have a load with the same hull only 2 3/4". I think its a much better load. pm me for details on that one.

Status of steel 12th edition shows this load: Rem type 6 3" yellow base, rem209, MM1230, 32gr steel, 1 1/4oz steel shot, 10,900psi, 1375fps. I run a fed209a and get 1390fps. My load has 130 #1 steel in it. Patterns real nice out of my Remington 870Wingmaster with the imp cyl, mod remchokes and truelock IM.

He has them on his 3" hull post.

Never got it...

RSI 75 has always been the go to load for those hulls, gives listed velocity with the Win Blue Box primers
With the Federal 209A/CCI 209M reduce down by 2 grains of STEEL powder to 35 grains and you will get around 1559 fps from RSI 75.
BTW 33 grains of STEEL powder will not give you 1475 fps from a 1 1/4 oz 3" hull load no matter what recipe you use.
There's only one recipe RSI lists that will give you those kind of velocities with 1 1/4oz and it still has to be modified a bit.

BBK, Oakie, Baltz & BTJustice,

I currently have 3 boxes of these 3" Nitro Steels unfired and plan to use the hulls to reload once season opens. Actually, I was kind of dumbfounded when I saw that the fps is only 1265 for them. I am trying to find loads/data for these hulls that would be considered higher velocity, so when you say 1559fps, that is what I am wanting. Really 1559 fps and above. Having said this, would you please post the RSI 75 load also, please sir?

Fyi, I am shooting a Remington 1100, 30" bbl with modified and/or improved cylinder rem choke. I will pattern it next week for the very first time with these factory Nitro Steels, the RSI 75 and 80 loads and post photos for you all. You hit the nail on the head... :hammer:
